wet jars and verm?
    #1543866 - 05/13/03 02:23 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My friend PC'd some jars last night, and proceeded to inoculate them this afternoon. After he inoc'd them, he noticed that most of the verm layer of his PF cakes had shrunk!  What happened (did water get in, or something?), and are they ruined? He used fine/medium verm, and now it looks a bit damp. :frown:

When my friend took the tin foil off the top of the jars to inoc, there were a few droplets of water on the lids. Is this normal? My friend just wiped off the top of the lids before he inoculated.

Normal, but what do I know about cakes.

UPDATE: Most of the jars are about 50% colonized, some less... some more. Its been almost 4 weeks, my friend is wondering if you guys think there is a chance for these jars or what?

Are things on track considering not all "optimal conditions" were met? Or do you guys think he should abort, and start over?

mycelium is a very durible little organism, they can produce in some really adverse conditions...just be patient...some times they wanna be a little stubborn or feel it should take its time....sometimes a couple of months....everything seems normal as the discription goes....and it just requires a little patience....usualy more than anyone really has....

If a colonization takes so extremely long, chances are the substrate is contaminated, for instance with bacteria.
Do the jars smell?

Four weeks is a real long time. Hopefully, they were quart or gallon jars. Wet jars usually equals contams. Reason is that the excess water slows down the myc. growth and makes the environment friendly to other contaminations. Did you try taking the tape of the jars and flipping them? Also, what temp. are the jars being kept at? Wet jars are bitch because you spend and waste all those weeks for nothing. Hopefully, you will get something out of work.

My friend used 1 pint jars. They are being kept around 82-85F in an incubation chamber.

The jars smell the same as when my friend placed them in the incubator.

He hasnt tried taking the tape off, because he didnt put any tape on the jars to begin with. He also has not tried flipping the jars yet.

Thanks for all the input guys.

i would recommend flipping, as it will help with fresh air and take away any water droplets left. also, if your incubating chmaber is sealed, then you could be gettin probs with no fresh air-if its sealed in a rubbermaid, than a blanket over the top instead of the lid should help.

My friend uses a blanket to keep the heat in, and it is not sealed. The incubator is in a closet, and the door only opens every other day, not every single day. Maybe the closet doesnt have enough air?

photovorix how long did it take yours to get to 98% visible colonization, and were you using pint jars?
