Heating fruiting chamber?
    #11460546 - 11/15/09 02:53 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Looking for recommendations on how to heat a fruiting chamber in a relatively cold room during winter (50-70°F). (probably shotgun terrarium or related, using perlite and rubbermaid container). What's worked for you?

Thanks for the suggestion. The night time temperature drop (zone 9-10) will reduce the temp in the room, but a space heater all night takes a ton of power... hmm...

I have been forced to heat my whole room for the last month it hasent changed the power bill to much but thats the trade off cost more money but keeps you able to keep on doing this hobby. 60-70 is alright to fruit in I have even fruited fine in the 50's.

So you would advise against this method?

I personally wouldn't use it, heating the room its in gives you the benefit of having a space for jars to incubate as well

They will be just fine.  Just expect slow growth.

Fruiting at low temps is actually beneficial.  Your fruits will likely be more both more dense and potent.

Heating your fruiting chamber can create some problems with your humidity.

So if say someone were to use a small lizard heating pad at the bottom of the tub (on the outside bottom) it would increase contam rates still? I only ask because it is winter and I am experimenting with edibles. Now, I have all the info I need but this dang heating problem is driving me nuts. I bought this little plug in pad that generates nice heat (90` on the pad and 85` within a 6 inch radius) and I have used it on a container with water in it to see if it would over heat the water too much but it worked just fine. Let me know as soon as you can because I have about a week or so before birthing.
Thanks!!!

I believe that warm terrarium is going to be a safe haven for contaminants in that cold room, regardless of how you heat it or what temperature it is heated to. I'm no expert, so I'd get a second opinion.

Bumping a two year old thread that has been re-threaded, but just to be clear heating your fc will deplete your RH, harbor contaminants, and mess with onetwo of the three primary pinning triggers. If the room is too cold, heat the room, not the fc.

It's best to use an oil type heater for the fruiting chamber.

Any room heater with exposed elements will mess up your RH.

Actually not everyone was a noob.  Being a noob is a very new phenomenon.  Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing".  Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about.
