cakes died, i'm pretty sure help?
    #1542445 - 05/12/03 07:15 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

okay i had two cakes i think they might've dried out or something went wrong...

i put them in a cooler with perlite on the bottom an inch or so layer that was damp and i also put a little water in the bottom... i don't know if it was maintaing the humidity though because my digital hygrometer doesn't seem to get higher then 60... i fanned them and put some light on them and i sprayed the sides occasionally it seemed like they started pinning but then i'd check and they'd be bruised or withered and now there's just brown spots i think that might be rotted...

i even dunked them for 24 hours before birth... the mycelium on the side looked like it got all flat... bah...

well at least u got pins u can eat? try doin this, and dont hold me too it cause im kinda not too smart usually, but it should work in theory...if you touch the cake and it seems all hard and dry, get a sterile knife and scrape the sides pretty hard (think of it as exfoliating)...then redunk it for 12-24 hours. Its kinda like deep scratching just on a cake

Well... if your humidity gauge only shows 60, mabe you didn't put enough water in the perlite, in about an inch of perlite, at least 1/2 an inch should be water, make sure you maintain that 1/2 inch of water in 1 inch of perlite... just some info from the perlite faqs around here.

is it easier to add the water to the perlite or the perlite to the water?

Damn man we're not gunna hold ur hand, put if you must kno its all the same... a method is to add them both at the same time....playin pour down perlite and mix in some wata...some have 70% saturated it and then jsut mixed it around it works perfectly that way

1/2 inch of water is NOT neccessary in 1in of perlite, I know people who dont have any standing water, they soak the perlite in water, and then put that wet perlite in the bottom of their terrarium, This keeps the terrariums plenty humid, It doesnt matter how much water is in with the perlite aslong as the perlite is not fully submerged, and can wick the moisture into the air. so once again we have a newbie giving BS advice...

damnit i'm not asking for you to hold my hand
i've tried three different terrariums
i've tried damp perlite, with dry perlite on top
i've tried dry perlite with water in the bottom
i've tried just moist perlite

i'm running out of ideas here, i'd just like to grow some golden teachers
i've read the FAQs and the teks

god damn...

ihavefingers:

You shouldn't be growing golden teachers, unless it's legal where you live.

Second, PM mycofile for any cultivation questions.
