Nervous About Casing
    #1541170 - 05/12/03 10:28 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I had originally planned to case when I first started my grow but now that I've read the casing FAQ and all of the suggestions for newbs I'm not sure. I only have one cake left out of thirteen of my originals (I have other cakes going but this one is the only one that is ready now).

I'm fairly well read in all of the FAQs and TEKs. What I want now is opinions.

I just want to make sure that I get mushrooms with this cake and nothing else, i.e. contams.

Should I case or fruit the cake?

Also if I cut the cake in half and fruit the two hlves as cakes would the be beneficial as in a larger flush?

A one cake casing is rather pointless. Either fruit it as a cake or wait until you have at least one more jar ready to case with it.

How long can you hold onto a cake that is fully colonized before it needs to have something done with it?

The other cakes are weeks behind.

My friend has kept colonized substrate in the fridge for months before fruiting.

It would be more beneficial to add a casing layer on top to help it get al the moisture it needs.

Well the guy next door just decided to birth this one. He can't wait to see those little babies grow out like little trees.

He would have left them in the jar if he had known about the hippie neglect tek before he birthed it.

What do you guys think of my neighbors fruiting chamber?

"Also if I cut the cake in half and fruit the two hlves as cakes would the be beneficial as in a larger flush?"

The SoS tek kind of addresses this question. I met a guy once that wanted to test that principle out. Last I heard from him his 'mini casings' were about to pin. If splitting the cakes in half for a casing works, then splitting the cakes before fruiting them directly could probably work too. Your end yeald wouldn't be much better, but you might get more on the first flush.

SPLITTING CAKES AND TRYING TO FRUIT SUCKS!!!!!

i tried this with almost 5 different cakes...i cut them in half, laid them on some wet vermiculite, and filled in the gaps between them with more wet verm, which i would rewet every few days when it got dry...

overall...i have harvested 3 shrooms from the whole thing after 3 weeks

i have alraedy abandoned this project and tried to salvage the cakes by crumbing and casing, and it looks like i might have a dope flush comin up

Ok well so much for that. It does work pretty well for casings though.
