El Topo/Alexandro Jordowsky/Surrealism
    #1539961 - 05/11/03 09:17 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I was wondering if any of you people on the shroomery have seen the art film El topo. Jordowsky, the guy who made this movie, said something like "I see in cinema what the western world sees in psychedelic drugs." Granted, he said this around the time El Topo was released, like 1972 I think, so it's not like the whole western world...
anyway, the movie is very surreal, and is too strange to really discribe well...it has enjoyed some underground sucess, but not too much.. I would recomend it to all you trippers. you can get it from online stores, usually it's the japanesse version, but it's in english, just japanesse subtitles.

I like your sig, it's very artistic. I too "just wanna be the cool guy with all the weird drugs nobody else has." I think that your sig deserves it's own thread.

No way, "The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy the world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas." Deserves it's own thread.

hey, I didn't mean to be trite, I just think that it's good to recognize that the tripping subculture has just as much snob appeal as other social groups. I didn't think about it for a long time; I was so focused on how totally cool exotic psychedelics where that I didn't realize that I started judging people based on their esoteric knowledge.

oh, and murex, I agree, abraxas would make an interesting thread. but enough about what _would_ be interesting.

yeah, I didn't say that it wasn't, I was saying that we should talk about the subjects, not just talk about how it would be nice to talk about them.

so you've read demian? hesse's work has really influenced my thought, it got me into existentialism.

I don't read Demian. I just know what Abraxas is. Or at least the concept of it.

This might need to be in another thread btw.

Abraxas is a name adopted by the Egyptian Gnostic Basilides, containing the Greek letters [alpha], [beta], [rho], [alpha], [xi], [alpha], [sigma], which, as numerals, amounted to 365. It was used to signify the supreme deity as ruler of the 365 heavens of his system.

I also saw El Topo on acid sometime '72-'74. I was immediately pissed at my friend Ed who dragged me there, and said to look beyond the horror. The various degrees of enlightenment that were portrayed was memorable, as well as some of the images that evoked what Stan Grof calls the Basic Perinatal Matrices of the psyche. I would like to see it again.

Since you're old like me, you might remember that part of Firesign Theatre's 'Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers,' where the Deacon identifies himself as: "...I am Deacon E.L. Mouse..."

I guess I used to be interested in Mythology a long time ago. I moved from Mythology to Religon, to Philosophy. Now I can't go any further.
