Casing Layer
    #1539816 - 05/11/03 08:13 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

It says in 'The Mushroom Cultivator' to use peat moss...blah blah in their formula. For curiousity's sake, would manure do just as well? Secondly, it does not state that the formula for casing has to be sterilized... well...does it? as in pasteurized? Alight, and lastly, would it be better to literally mix the substrate with the casing...in order to allow growth more rapidly...

thanx a bunch

The casing layer is a non-nutritious layer placed over the substrate to induce pinning and provide moisture. As such, it is usually made of materials like vermiculite, peat, or coco coir. Sterilization of the casing layer depends on which one is used, for example many people use coco coir without sterilizing it, whereas others do sterilize their casing materials, for example by PCing (it is in fact simply safer to sterilize). The casing by definition is an actual layer placed on top of the nutritious substrate, and is not mixed with it......but the idea is to let the mycelium partially colonize the casing (but not overtake it, called "overlay"), so you can see the myc in the "valleys" of the casing....at which time, pinning should be induced.
