How new growers can use cakes for........

Starting one out with the MS PF Tek is almost fool proof. From there once the new grower can repeatedly succeed on growing and printing, then they can start taking cakes and using them as spawn for bulk coir by crumble and spawning or grating. I believe that whatever we can do in the advanced growing (agar, grain, spawn,) a new grower can do with cakes.
I like to add goodies to the BRF mix like spent coffee grounds at about a cup per mix just for something else for the fungus to digest. can't tell if it is of any use, but better than letting it just sit around and go bad, plus they are free from starbucks. To use this though, the cakes have to be sterilized!
 Treasure Coast
Pan Cyans, yes it works for them too! Add in manure, equal to the amount of verm used. BRF is the same proportion.
Family of assorted cakes, pan cyans, and cubes(2 red boy, rest PESA) (from back to front.)

The first is done by wrapping the jar and using the verm layer as a casing, basically a mini bulk. Just mist the top layer once or twice a day. Then wait for the fruits.
The next two pics are from cakes used as spawn to hpoo, but works for coir as well. First and second pictures are from first and second flush. Granted it was B+, I know, but it works from a MS cake with ease and only needed 6 cakes to do it. Just cut off the verm layer and a bit of the top with a butter knife that was PC'd. With all sterile techniques done right, any new grower can succeed at this hobby...with ease. But the pressure cooker or sterilizer is an essential tool, regardless of what you hear other wise, it will deliver the best sterilization of media you can get economically.
It seems lately that a few have been thinking that their methods of agar work is the only way to get anywhere in this hobby. Well, not true, all but the last of my grows were MS. very few did I do with agar.
I wanted to used this time to share the information that we were graced with by PF himself on this eve of his no longer being with us as a tribute to his works and contribution to all of us, that most soon forget about.

Nice thread mister.
You are quite right. PF-Tek is a sterilization tek, and this allows the creative cultivator to use any desired supplement.
Add sticks, or sawdust, for Shitake cakes.
Add poo to pan cakes.
Add bug guts for Cordyceps cakes.*
Have fun, and tip your hat to the Professor. He is just leading the way again, to a new and better place.

* OK, I have not done this one, but would love to make this work!

great job.
cakes are nice to work with.
but for the most consistent results the Agar-grain-spawn method is the best.
but god i love cakes!

That link is something of a time capsule too.
The comments were from back during the shroomery vs. mjs days.
