Have You Written Your "Leaders?"
    #1539742 - 05/11/03 09:22 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I wrote my representatives today to express my extreme dissapointment with the co-called "Patriot Act II."

Does this make any difference? Do these people give one shit about what we think once they're already in office? Have you written any representatives? Have you tried to take a stand? Do you think the citizens can really change things?

Any other suggestions to somebody who wishes to express their extreme discomfort with what their government is going?

i dont know man. i really wonder. i think sometimes were just completely fucked. and there isnt much we can do short of a huge coop to change policy in the united states. who knows how much power they really have. the only thing that keeps these people in power is peoples accceptance of them as leaders. i think before you can change any laws you have to change the people. if everyone disagreed with them they wouldnt be making the laws, we would. but with the media and television, and american idol, and "reality tv" and wendys i find it hard to believe, that most americans, will be able to get up much less care to try and stop anything. their nature is the american consumerist way. and they are grazing off what the government feeds them. they are content in ignorance. and whether we have the ability to break the fence, i dont know. we would have to get more of people like us high up there. or at least get a mass quantity of people to change some legislature. but sometimes i fear that we are doomed to a big brother goverment. if its not already that way. i honestly dont know strumpling. lol

I wrote to my Representative reguarding the AMBER Alert act(which of course contained the infamous RAVE Act). Here's what he wrote back:
Quote:

Dear Jonathan:

Thank you for contacting me about AMBER Alert programs and S. 151, the omnibus child crimes bill. I appreciate the time you have taken to inform me of your views on these important issues.

I support AMBER Alert systems that create voluntary partnerships between local law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters in an effort to recover abducted children. The first of these programs was named in memory of a kidnapping victim in Texas. Since the introduction of that program, AMBER Alert systems have led to the rescue of many children across the country. In fact, Sacramento was one of the first regions to implement an AMBER Alert system.

As you may know, S. 151 was the final version of legislation similar to H.R. 1104, a bill introduced by Chairman Sensenbrenner. The AMBER-related provisions of S. 151 would mandate a national coordinator at the Justice Department and make federal money available to states that have implemented their own AMBER systems. In addition to codifying AMBER Alert at a federal level, the omnibus child crime bill would make changes to federal sentencing procedures for sex crimes or crimes against children. It also would increase penalties for making or using child pornography, illegal drugs, and fake identification cards. Finally, the bill would authorize federal law enforcement to request authority from courts to use wiretapping in order to investigate child pornography cases. I was dissappointed that many of these controversial provisions were included with the core AMBER legislation in the bill. However, I felt that Congress should address the urgent need to prevent additional child abductions. As such, I voted in support of S. 151.

Once again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me about AMBER Alert and the omnibus child crimes bill. Should you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,
Robert T. Matsui
Member of Congress

So basically, if you get a reply, he'll ignore any points you made and send a pre-written letter saying what he plans to do anyway.

i've written in the past to Klinton and one to Spence Abraham (MI-Rep (R)) and got nothing more than a pre-manufactured response...that was pretty useless. I did write David Bonier (MI-Rep (D)) when i was in the Army because my paperwork was screwed up (the fault of the Army) and basically took away ANY of my college fund money that i was supposed to recieve. I got a written letter from him and recieved my money in about a month. (prior to that it took me 1 year to even get a response).

Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

>I support AMBER Alert systems that create voluntary partnerships between local law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters in an effort to recover abducted children

they need a bill...they have motorolla...they need to get out of the donut shops and start turning over rock in the park, need to start with executions because prisons are like country clubs and they know they wont be punished

>the omnibus child crime bill would make changes to federal sentencing procedures for sex crimes or crimes against children

Let the parent have about 20 minutes with the guy...I bet his idea of fun would change, maybe tattoo in huge letter 'Child Molester' on his face. The public would show him as well....yeah....but if it isnt cruel and unusual...it's no punishment

>Congress should address the urgent need to prevent additional child abductions

Lock them in a clset and never let them out....police are supposed to prevent crime...we see how well all the cops and legislation has worked so far

**write back and request a personal response, addressing the issues you see as removable, as your friends to do the same....if it's another xerox letter, call, go to his office and discuss it personaly....I got a 5 page letter from one of my reps, it actualy addressed the issues I was concerned with...some are decent...others like Xerox....let him know that unless the issues are addressed you will bring it to light that his only concern is how quickly he can burry everyones rights, youll do al you can to ensure he is removed from office....and file a lawsuit, he is your representative, he is supposed to listen to YOU....even if he doesnt believe in what you do....

You didn't feel at least a bit better about yourself to expressing a concern to somebody who claims to be your representative?

no, not rally. I mean, it was therapeutic for me, but I don't think I accomplished anything... the senator probably never read my letter. it was most likely handled by one of her aides, who just put my name into a computer that inserted it into the form letter, to be printed and signed en masse and sent out. politians are too busy trying to get re-elected to be actually doing their jobs.

Every letter counts. Automated, or no responses whatsoever may make you give up. That is what they want. Keep them coming, and remember, a single person can make a diffrence, dont leave it up to everyone else, you may be the deciding factor. Congrats to those who have made an effort, you are the heros on our side of the war.

yeah it is bullshit, but I didn't really expect a reply or anything... i mean, these people probably get thousands of letters and they have very busy schedules. writing your congressmen is just a good way to vent, unless you can get 10,000 other people to write them at the same time about the same thing and REALLY get their attention.. otherwise, your letter will be lost among the thousands... let me know if you get a response.

We should get everyone at the Shroomery to write letters in to free Ed Rosenthal or something. I don't think we mass cooperate enough around here. I'd be in for it.
