pop culture references to mushrooms

So I'd never really listened to an eminem record until a few days ago. Of course I've heard his singles on the radio, but not the other songs... anyway, I got to listen to "my fault" a song about a girl who takes too many mushrooms. this isn't the only place that eminem talks about shrooms thought, there are several other references throughout the cd. Now, I think that the perspective that eminem's music communicates is really important (the marginalized, uneducated) and totally appreciate his considerable musical talent, but I don't think that he's really all that in the know when it comes to the shroomies. He lumps them with other drugs, and doesn't see the possibility of helping the girl in the song. instead, he's convinced that a hospital visit is unavoidable. it's cool that he notes the drastic change of awareness ("didn't mean to take you to my world"), but he doesn't seem to realize the implications of this drastic change.

she dies in the end too. my friend played that to prove a point that shrooms are bad, because i'm so stoked on them that I sometimes will blab about my experiences (especially when I'm stoned). My response: yea eminem is a great source for info

He's just telling a story. Its a song and he's trying to get the right words to make another hit, thats all his songs are about.

see, I think that it may be that his current persona is the way it is because it sells records, but I don't think that it started out that way. before eminem it you wouldn't expect that a white guy with a nasally voice who talks about being a loser would become a hip hop star... it's like the interlude on the record where the company exec says something like "dre is rapping about bitches and blunts, you're rapping about vicodin and homosexuals". I think that his sucess is a sign of something more profound... something about what needs to be expressed, all the frustration of people caught in the same bullshit that marshal mathers was in... if people listen to this kind of thing, maybe they'll start making connections between their votes and social justice. so I don't think that mushroom misinformation is a result of eminem, but that his attitude is reflective of most kids.
I've found that there's this very esoteric mystique around psychedelic drugs for young people; it's like this huge secret that not many people really understand. I think that references to lsd or mushrooms confuse the fuck out of kids. the expectations that kids hold when they first trip or roll on x can really wig me out sometimes.

I liked the Smurfs reference to Mushrooms:
Old man Gargamel was walking through the forest one day when he discovered a mushroom patch.
After uhh.. "closer examination, " he realized that little blue men live in these mushrooms!! Since this was such an amazing discovery, he HAD to try and capture at least one of these little blue men so he could show it to his friends to prove he wasn't completely insane.
Unfortunately for old man Gargemel, the little blue men, or "smurfs," only existed in his shroomed-out mind.

If you ingest the WRONG type of shrooms (poisonous) then yes, it can kill you. Not by ODing, but by poison. If you ingested the right shrooms (psilocybin), then good luck trying to kill yourself on those.

yeah, I've heard really weird stories about lsd overdose... I can't really believe them, or stories of cubensis od.... cause I've taken a bunch of drugs in various mixtures and amounts, and I'm still here... It seems that people "dying" of pyschedelics are all just urban legends.

LOL The odds of dying from stress on a bad trip is VERY minimal. In order to OD, you would need to ingest something like 6 times your body weight in shrooms. The danger on a bad trip is doing something you will regret (hurting yourself, killing yourself, etc). Psilocybin alone will not cause you to die. The toxicology of shrooms is lower than aspirin for fucks sake.

erm.. correct me if I'm wrong, but in that song he says that she's drinking lysol at one point. I'm have no medical background, but I would think that would probably have more to do with her death in the song than anything.. just at thought.

George Harrisons song about eating mushrooms in hawaii:
I ate it and at once my eyes could see you No sooner had I ooped it down I felt so far off from the ground I stood on.
My legs they seemed to me like high-rise buildings My head was high up in the sky My skin the sun began to fry like bacon.
And then somebody old appeared and asked had I come far . . . And hadn't they just seen me up on Haleakala . . . I kept on body surfing to pretend I hadn't heard There was someone there beside me, swimming like Richard III And I'm still smiling
Seven naked native girls swam seven sacred pools . . . Lone-ranger smoking doobies said you're breaking all the rules . . . You'd better get your clothes on or else there'll be a row . . . If it wasn't for my sunstroke I would take you on right now . . . And I'm still smiling.
I fell in love with my Soft-Hearted Hana She entered right in through my heart And now although we're miles apart I still feel her.
She lives beneath the crater in the meadow She moves among the fruit and grain You can meet her after heavy rain has fallen.

Pop culture and shrooms do not mix. If shrooming was introduced into mainstream music, their entire corperate scheme would collapse.
Just a thought

Mushroom Cult by Dog Fashion Disco
Mushroom Cult. Kaleidoscope of love. Ophidians dance as the shifting occurs. We are stars and electric animals. Nurtured by the mothers of prostitutes.
Floating in a mushroom universe. Swimming in a sea of cyclostomes. And as we surface through the tide, You open up and I come inside.
I must be in limbo, ?Cos purgatory?s always felt like home.
And as the world spins round and round, We fornicate upon the cotton clouds. That rain down sulphur smiles On the children at play in the poppy fields.
Sinking for what seems like forever. Like Atlantis into the sea. To forget the shore and wash away, Wash away my memory.
I must be in limbo, ?Cos purgatory?s always felt like home.
Inside the moon lives the high priest of the mushroom cult. Upon the altar are the ashes of the Pharisees. I sold my soul, Sold my soul, Sold my soul away. I?m free of guilt, Free of sin, Free of everything!

What do ya'll think about that Jefferson Airplane song? Damned if I can find the lyrics right now...
Have some of these purple berries, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now, Havent got sick once.... They'll probably keep us both alive....
