Is this going to be a problem?
    #1538826 - 05/11/03 12:31 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I steralized and inoculated my jars yesterday, today I went to look at them, and it seems the dry verm on the top is loose and can move all around. Is that going to be a big problem? Keep in mind I have the tiny pieces of verm, I bought it off line, and they never told me which kind it was.

It's just the top layer that's moving around, the wet verm/brf seems to be fine.

Is all of the verm dry, or just the top layer?

Many people will put a thin layer of straight vermiculite on top of their BRF/verm mix to act as a defensive layer against contaminates. If this is what you've done, then you will be fine.

The verm is dry, nothing will grow on it until it gets moistened. Just make sure that you inoculate into the wet part of your substrate.

Just the top layer, yea of corse all procedures was followed with mixing the brf and verm AND water. But I was just curious if it was ok for the top layer of verm to be loose, and able to move all over the place. Also, when I mixed up all my verm and brf, I only used about half of it. I had a lot left over. And I used the recipe given to me on "PF tek for simple minds" 140 ml verm for each jar, and 40 ml brf for each jar.

Movement not a problem, the dry verm barrier is just to help impede contams from getting to the nutritious substrate underneath where they could get a foothold, during inoculation.

Oh lana, heh, your the person I bought the verm from in the first place. Any plan on offering the large sized verm?

P.S.....for the verm seal specifically, the smaller verm would actually be MORE effective.

No, no plans to offer large verm.  Large and fine verm is just a matter of preference.  There's no evidience that either one is better than the other.  Large or fine, it all works
