how many " generations " can you go when transfering myc from rye to rye. can one say turn 8 jars rye to 128 or beyond ?

In TMC, the author demonstrates turning 1 grain jar into 100 using g2g transfers, so 8 jars should give you hmmm, lets see, about 800.

Dog

I was searching also for a documented recommended limit for generations produced by myc transfer or cloning, until it would be advisable to break that up with a generation of multispore innoc......do you know ?

There is degradation after the third generation according to TMC. In his demonstration he used a petri to inoculate 10 jars, these 10 jars to inoculate 100 more via g2g, then those 100 to do 1000.

Do you know how the degradation expresses itself?

I'm certainly willing to believe Stamets regarding the three generations..... but I wonder what characteristics the mycelium.....or fruits....show to demonstrate that there is a negative direction?

My foaf goes out 4 generations, with no discernable ill effect.

From G1, he marks, dates & holds out & refridgerates several jars, to stall growth.

Same for G2 & G3.

At G4, while cropping out, he goes back to the G1 stored jars & G2G's them into more jars. So on & so forth, with each generation, until about 1 year has past & the G trail is about to end.

He then goes back to a G1 print & repeats the process.

In other woirds - IMHO, with thought, you can go out about one year from day 1 of the 1st muli/spore innoc if running crop after crop.

LOL, if you have multiple strains, you need a stand alone -- dedicated fridge (or 2), for jar culture storage. Hint. Seal jars tightly, otherwise they will dehydrate.

What my foaf has seen was that, In a constant controled enviroment, it will demo itself as less rizo, slower substrate colonization, dwarfs, mutants & far less yeild.

Hey Six, what would you consider slow substrate colonization? And if mustants are present should a friend assume that he has spores from generations past the "Proper Limit" ............... If that were true how does anyone really know what they are getting?

Spores don't count. They are pretty random, though, so who knows what you're getting? Multispore culture is ok, IMO, because a certain dominant strain will take over.

There can be substrains with some wierd idiosincrasies, though. This is why cloning helps.
