Psylocybe Fanaticus / Robert ' Billy' Mcpherson R.I.P. * 16
    #15382555 -

I just received the news that the mind of Robert 'Billy' Mcpherson, once better known as Psylocybe Fanaticus, is succumbing to hepatitus C. He will not be with us in 2012. He is in coma since 11-11-11 and in his final hours before leaving his body. His techniques will survive forever.

I guess that still most psychonauts who cultivate Psilocybe cubensis for entheogenic and other purposes use his creation, the PF TEK, to do so

remember...

Over half a century has passed since Albert Hofmann identified psilocybin as the psychedelic (="mind manifesting") material in several species of Mexican mushrooms. One of those is Psilocybe cubensis.
Since then many hundreds similar psychedelics have been made. But psilocybine still stands out as nature's friendliest and best liked psychedelic. Today, over one hundred psilocybine producing mushrooms are known. From all of those, Psilocybe cubensis still is the largest, fastest, easiest cultivatable and third most potent one. Especially the PF Classic cubensis, known by some as penis mushroom.
Beginning in the nineteen sixties, myriad of methods have been published to grow Psilocybe cubensis. But only one technique can do without petri dishes, -pressure canner or other laboratory equipment. That is the Psylocybe Fanaticus Technique or PF TEK, created by Robert McPherson in 1991, which currently is the worlds most popular method to grow 'magic' mushrooms (downloaded, printed, distributed and practiced many millions of times).

The PF TEK is to the entheogenic experience what the hot water extraction is to the caffeine experience. People will be using it many centuries from now.

Levitate well Billy... you are now known by a small circle of friends but your practices are and will be followed by many for as long as mushrooms and mankind will coexist. The spores of your knowledge will be spread to the stars and beyond.

It was and is a pleasure to have grown with you!

"The spores of your knowledge will be spread to the stars and beyond."

This may well actually happen.  If we get out of this solar system,
or any other life form from this planet, then we will be carrying
spores, whether we want to or not. (and I expect it will be intentional)

I first tried to grow in about 1980. This was a decade too soon.

Perhaps this now is the good thread to reveal some extra bits of info...

Something about me: Ranonar = Yachaj Paye (I posted under that name a decade ago). I have maintained Billy's archive during the nineties, and still do that.

Funny things I remember of Billy. He not only was a cultivation and musical genius - able to make complicaded things very simple - but also quite stubborn. Not the easiest teacher to have at all. And he was not that good in spelling words. Psylocybe fanaticus of course should have been Psilocybe but once the company name existed he hold on to it. So Psylocybe it is. And in his manual he wrote about inoculation. Not inoculation as it should be. But this misspelling went lagerly unnoticed. Tons of psilophiles now write inoculation. Just do a web search on the word - it is a clear sign of the influence of Billy!!

One unpublished 'secret' of his sporesyringe formula. People always were puzzled why his syringes always appeared so evenly mixed with spores. The spores never stuck to the syringe barrell! It was a hallmark of his syringes only. Nobody was able to replicate it. And here at shroomery and there at mycotopia there have been several attempts to figure it out. Clever folks indeed figured out that something was added to the water. But what was it? People experimented with detergent to make the water thinner. Others used micro sound waves to separate the clumps of spores into individual spores. Some even added sex lube to the water (really!). Man, you made Billy rolling over the floor about that!!!

OK. Now is the time to reveal the secret. First some explanation. The water should not be thinner but thicker (so that spores will not move to the syringe barrell wall). And the spore clumps should not be totally broken up into individual spores (technically the clumps should never be smaller than two spores, but in practice a dozen or so is fine). Also, whatever is added to the water should not lead to pre-germination of the spores. And that is difficult since (almost) whatever does not kill the spores will be eaten by them and used for germination. Of course, whatever is added to the water should not be toxic to the spores either.

The solution to all these requirements was AGAR. Just plain agar agar. In a concentration of one gram per liter of water. ISn't it weird that no copycat vendor thought about that?

Recipe: You make bottles of 1 g/l agarwater, and in those you inject concentrated sporewater. The spores in the concentrated sporewater (in 30ml bottles)  may be broken up (if they all stick together) by freezing/thawing the small bottles. One full petri dish of spores in 1 small bottle is enough for 5 liters of sporewater this way. 500 syringes.

It is bizarre that no one so far thought of a simple pure agarwater solution. But that is what is was!!! No sex lube definately!

Another 'secret': how to clean the spores from bacteria. That was done with tetracycline - if needed. One petri dish of Spores was scraped in 30ml bottles containing 1 g/liter of tetracyclin and kept for 4 days at roomtemperature. This killed the bacteria, then the spore concentrate was injected into 500ml agarwater bottles.

But this is all a good story for history. The spore syringe is dead anyway. Yeah that is right. Among the final and yet unpublished parts of the PF TEK was the removal of the spore syringe of the technique. After the pressure canner and the petri dish the syringe was the last annoying cumbersome utensil to go.

A year ago Billy and I communicated about re-ignition fanaticus. Billy wanted that because he knew he did not have much time on this planet anyway and he figured that it would then be better to take the risk of being caught and receive an effective 'life sentence' of less than a year, i.e. make the government pay for his remaining ospital bills, since they took his bank accounts earlier. Billy though that to be a good statement. But his wife -in 2003 another member of the 'fanaticus gang'- didn't see it that way.

The removal of the syringe would have been the main improvement of the new PF TEK. The old spore syringe would become obsolete. But the disagreement about the re-ignation of fanaticus.com prevented that. But now Billy is not here anymore there is no reason to keep it from happening.

More about this new technique will be published soon at the old fanaticus.com - I do not know how soon it actually will be because a couple of his old friends of the music scene (Billy was a hell of a sax/guitar/keyboard musician!!!) will use the site for a Billy memorial, so I gave them the password and will see what they make of it. But later on, just watch it, the spore syringe is about to retire and a replacement will be published at fanaticus.com

For the people who want some kind of proof that what I write is true - I just updated the old fanaticus site. Of course it is still possible that I am somebody who just hacked the pf site etc. and knows about the unpublished spore syringe making teks. I have no idea how I can prove to you all that this is all no sick joke. But it isn't, unfortunately.

At the moment I do not know if Billy's heart has stopped. I think it has but I do not want to distrub Micky and Shyleen (his wife and stepdaughter) in their wake around his death bed. I will receive an email when they feel it is time, and then I will inform mycotopia and shroomery immediately.

about the i nn oculation - that this very site had to make an auto spell correction module for that word is pretty sound proof that people insist on making this typo by the truckloads isn't it?

The spore syringe is used for reasons beyond just the PF tek. It's mainly a noob tool, more experienced people usually start with agar and take the agar culture directly to grain.

The syringe is useful because:
- It's cheap
- It's easy to make correctly
- It ships very well (both discreetly and it survives wild swings in temp and brutal handling)
- It's very durable (5-10 year old spore syringes are regularly used with success)
- It's very easy for noobs to understand and use correctly
- Correct sterile handling of a syringe is bonehead simple even for noobs
- It requires a minimal amount of spores
- A single syringe can inoculate a large number of substrates
- It can be used to inoculate virtually any type of container (bags, jars, glasses with tin foil, salt shakers, anything)

Adding agar to spore syringes may have worked at the time, but today that would be considered bad technique. Spore syringes are not sterile, they almost always contain contaminates that would love access to agar. Even tetracyclin wouldn't kill all the contaminates in syringes. Even small amounts of agar would increase contamination rates. No one ever complains about spores getting stuck to the barrel or uneven distribution, anyway.

Still, the addition of tetracyclin is an interesting idea, thanks for the info.

Almost true. But the syringe does not ship too well compared to a sporeprint. Sent them on a normal paper envelope and they will leak after being post stamped. An ideal utensil for liquid inoculations would be small enough to fit in a normal envelope, be made out of 1 part instead of four (plunger - barrell - needle -needle cover) and contain no metal parts.

and about the agar in the syringe. You are right about contamination risk if the agar is nutrified in some way. But the very reason that agar is used as gelling agent is that bacteria/yeasts/fungi do not digest it. Perhaps that a few uncommon molds can be grown on water agar. Water agar does not contaminate faster than water. All I am saying is that PF made his syringes with agar thickend water. Not that it is the best way to prevent that spores stick on the walls. But PF used this technique to produce 500 syringes per petridish, all with an even concentration, and no complaints whatsoever about contams.

Indeed. Absolutely. Any successor of the syringe should meet those requirements. And that is exactly what has been found.

It is possible to design a tool + technique  combo which is all that, is smaller than a syringe but which can be used to inoculate 10-20 times as many jars in one session. I was stunned when I saw it, and you will be too. Just wait and see. For cultivation purposes, the syringe is useful but almost a goner (just like the petri dish).

Is he in the hospital at Forks, or at home on Lake Quinault?

I do remember a noob using the name PF TEK over at mycotopia five or six years or so ago, who claimed that PF told him sex lube was his secret, and then PF logged in with his long-standing account and confirmed it.  Perhaps he was just playing games, but he used his own account(well after the bust and the picture on his Lake Quinault deck with an ankle bracelet) to say he had given his 'secret' to that kid, and it was either KY or Astroglide, or one of those similar products.  I don't think many people took that kid seriously because he was obviously a 'tard who disappeared fast when everything he tried to grow turned green, but someone with PFs long standing account there logged in and confirmed it.  I remember hip3 was involved in that thread as well.

I'm no longer a member at 'topia, but you might be able to search over there to find it, assuming hippie3 didn't it delete later.

About what is sad...

A friend of mine who read this thread just said "man, 500 syringes for 10 bucks each out of 5 liters of boiled tap water, and 7500 syringes per year sold for over a decade, that is a lot of money. I wish I could do that!"

Me: "well if you think that is a quick buck you should compare it to the ease of the government seizing most of it. That didn't take a decade but only a few months.

And when that was finally behind him the hospital bills came. The medical system denied him a liver - because he was ' a drug user' (as if marijuana has anything to do with hepC!!!). The result was that they could send him bill after bill after bill for bringing him back to life after every short time coma.

In the end, he and his wife ended up with almost nothing. Living of less than a thousand dollar a month for everything. Relatives and friends had to send money to make sure they survived.

All in all, the history of fanaticus between 1991 and 2011 was an almost perfect financial bell curve. Be it that the 2011 side was lower than the 1991 side. And the government and medical system have won.

That is the sad part.

But... on the other side... he gave mankind the PF TEK. And he proved that even people who never had a job (read: managed to survive all his life totally bossless) can produce something which survives forever. Perhaps especially those people. But do not choose this kind of lifestyle to end up rich. You may become rich for a time but usually it will not last. Especially the medical system is a bitch.

Denying him a liver because he smokes pot? That's fucking criminal.

But this isn't a debate about our broken medical system. It's about PF. Cultivating p. cubensis has been one of the most life changing experiences I've ever had - and it's, without a doubt, shaped me into the person I am today. Thank you, PF.  Without your techniques, I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as far as I did.

Billy's little techniques [Re: ranonar] * 1
    #15391869 -

Another less known 'secret' part of Billy's spore syringe production techniques (he always refered to those unpublished methods as the 'little' techniques, but it were the methods which were crucial for the creation of larger amounts of 'perfect' spore syringes) is the best way to make a print of a fleshy sporocarp (the PF Classic can be very fleshy).

Fleshy caps do not always make fat prints. Thinner cubes like PES Hawaiian (Golden Teacher) -perhaps the names have changed nowadays but I am refering to the famous cubes of the nineties- print much easier.

The reason is that the harvested cap is a living part of the mushroom and it needs oxygen to release the spores. So, if you would place the cap in a jar with a closed lid, as suggested at

SPORE PRINTING

Fleshy caps may not release their spores easily. And if you are not careful condensing water increase the risk for baterial contamination of the rest. You usually get anough spores to inoculate another dozen of jars but not enough to make a couple of hundred syringes.

The magic trick is to make a coin sized hole in the lid of the jar and plug it with cotton (you do not see that part on the picture at his site). And place a piece of wire on the bottom of the jar (to make sure that the cap is not in direct contact with the bottom). Steam-sterilize the jar (do not bake it in an oven).

Now put a cap in it. The cap can still breathe (through the cotton plug) and no condense water will form (it can evaporate). In a few days a beautiful fat print will be created, pleanty for 50-100 syringes. Remove the cap without touching it by putting the jar upside down.

Was Billy dishonest? No - he presented the PF TEK as a method to grow mushrooms and produce your own spore syringes, so you would only need to order from fanaticus once. And that is what it was. But folks who wanted to become a spore syringe vendor needed a simple technique to produce PF Classic spore syringes in bulk amounts. And Billy managed to not give that away while being completely open about making his customers self sufficient.

Wait, is he actually going like this because the US medical system denied him a liver transplant? I know hep. C comes back after transplants, but with a new liver someone can be treated with new drugs and stuff depending on the genotype of the virus.

God rest his soul....

I remember ordering his kit from High Times magazine back in the 90's.... back when I was living at my parents house at the time. So as you can imagine, I had been watching the mailbox very closely each day to make sure I got the package before my parents.
But one night I came home and went into the kitchen & low & behold there was this small "opened" cardboard box package laying on the kitchen counter with the PF Tech booklet & a spore syringe laying next to it......
My mind quickly raced, wondering which one of my parents must have opened it???  Hmmm.... well (I thought)...if it was my mom then it would not be laying on the counter but in the garbage, so it must have been my dad (THANK GOD) who was in the living room watching TV.
I went in the room and sat down (with the booklet & spore syringe) and I began carefully testing my dad to find out what he thought,  and first I tried foolishly making it out to be some non-hallucinogenic species of mushrooms that I was simply curious about trying to grow myself.... kinda like a personal "science project" type of activity,  and besides aren't ALL young 20-something year old guys interested in growing mushrooms?? Sure.. sort of "SEA MONKEYS"....if you remember those?
But of course my dad was not that dumb... and I was dumb to think he might be.
Eventually I gave in, and I told him I had been curious about growing psilocybin mushrooms for a long time of which he was already slightly aware of.  I pleaded with him to let me satisfy my curiosity and see if I could successfully grow them.  To my surprise he said "OK...I'll let you do it, IF its out of sight....... AND you give me the product!"  I agreed on his terms.... "SURE DAD,  YOU BET!"... and yet I knew very well he would not be asking me about it again,  & of course I wasn't going to let him know if & when the mushrooms grew.  About 2 months later I had my very first TRUE mushroom trip.... and it was quite memorable.

THANK YOU  Robert Mcpherson "Psilocybe Fanaticus"  and may GOD bless your soul in the here after.

That profound little event instantly changed & brightened my whole trip, & it ultimately changed me into a more positive minded person in life.

Is there any chance you could scan the original booklet and upload it somewhere? I think many would find it nostalgic and for those of us that haven't been in the shroom growing comunity in those times that PF was open for business, it would've been a good read, as it probably is one of few printed manuals. Before this fucking place existed there was ADM.  And you think some of the conversations here are heated?

LOL...yes you remember. PF was a big pain in my ass and slung a lot of crap my way back in the day before he got busted. 11 to 13 years ago. Anyone remember the Spore Wars je je je je
Yeah he was quite a character. Even went so far to snuff his nose at the FEDS right on his web site. Although we all seen how that worked out for him.

But it is thanks to his great idea that got me started in this business. I just took his idea and expanded on it by offering spore syringes from strains from around the world instead of just the PF  strain. And I was nice to my customers and gave them spore clouded syringes. Who cares if a few spores stick to the sides of the syringes when you load them up with spores.

Anyway, I appreciate the great idea he came up that made this hobby so much easier for everyone. For that I give him a big "atta boy" and props.

I hope he made peace with Jesus before he passed and is enjoying God's love and comfort.

I think I might have shut down a couple of days just to clean up my site and change some wording. This is one of the reasons PF got busted, he had full details how to grow the illegal mushrooms on his web site as well as his book. Makes me wonder with so many other spore vendors having forums on their sites these days discussing growing illegal mushrooms with their customers which one is next. Personally I think that is reckless business practice and puts customers names and address at risk. This is also a BIG reason I no longer post info on these forums.
All entheogenic vendors should have learned from PF's mistake, but many did not :frown:

Nice story. I remember ordering from him, but I do not remember getting any instructions. $10 per syringe with no shipping cost was great.

I am still amazed that the spoorvenders are still functioning, considering all of the narrow-minded bandwagons picking up steam to illegalize most every substance or plant. I guess that shrooms do not cause as much trouble as JWH, salvia, bathsalts, and khat.

In 1997 when I first ordered my syringe from PF to get 'fucked up', I was a Florida loser battling depression and stuck on bad drugs, instead of getting fucked up, I got high and I saw God and began, at age 38, living my REAL life. Now I am self employed Buddhist in Eugene, Oregon with a beautiful wife and family. i see Love anywhere I look for it and I can call bliss from my inner soul that may move me to tears of joy any time I need it.

Transcension is real and possible if I quiet the distractions in my mind and embrace the peace that follows. Billy, you led me to greater things in life: hope, magic, REAL inner peace and LOVE, and a burning appreciation of the time we have on Earth as well appreciation of  the spirits that ride us as we hold onto life. No small token of gratitude or thanks is appropriate here from me to Billy but I like to think he knows what he did for us through his sacrifices for his helping the mushroom to reveal it's knowledge to us.

Much peace to you, Professor, whether you be at rest or not.

I wish with all my heart than someone, somewhere has been so positively affected by some thought, word, or deed of my own.  That would be a reason to have lived, IMHO.

Kudos for having shared that fact with us all.  Mr. McPherson's life has been validated repeatedly in this thread.  How wonderful!!!  :psychsplit:

I may be new to growing, but I am not new to mushrooms and have over 25 years experience with wild harvesting and entheogen use... only recently dipping my toes in the water of cultivation. I followed the PF Tek to the letter and currently have a pinset on my very first cakes that an expert would be proud of. I have read all I could about Fanaticus, his 'DEA Vs' case etc and went looking for some of his old posts in the archives. What a HUGE debt of gratitude I owe him, and all the other pioneers, like Stamets, and the top TC's on this forum. All of them heroes - making it so even a numbnuts like me can grow mushrooms in a bedroom cupboard. The simplicity of the tek is its genius.

I mean to move to bulk as soon as I can, but anyone who thinks cakes are a waste of time obviously haven't seen cakes like they can be. The PF Tek will live forever. RIP, [Professor] Psilocybe Fanaticus.

P.S
Hope that before PF got ill he got an apology from the [also now deceased] paranoid dickhead at Mycotopia who liked nothing better than to go around accusing random people of being narcs... and generally spreading a lot of disharmony. Always wondered what kind of person it took to say such things to the biggest legend in sub-culture mycology, based on nothing but 'bong paranoia'. Anyway, PF, you're well out of it, sir, and in a far better place. I almost envy you in a way. Watch over my cakes will you? Peace!

Of course your talking about Hippie3...I had no idea he turned on PF. Hippie3 and PF used to gang up on me back in 99-01 and give me a world a shit, I thought they were buddies. Neither of them ever apologized :frown: After enough garbage, I turned them both off and stopped listening. I had no idea Hip turned on PF. Yeah, H3 turned on him and called him a "narc"... original as ever, lol.

I was shocked upon discovering the shroomery and mycotopia forums that some of the people who have a great ability and experience in growing shrooms, have not been listening to the lessons their fruits have been *trying* to teach them. Seems the moment someone gets a bit of kudos from their peers as a good grower, massive egos get in the way. Then facepalming "newbies" and general disharmony ensues. In H3's case, that was an example of someone who desperately needed to stop taking weed and shrooms, as the paranoia was just silly - either that or the "narc" accusations were wielded as a weapon against people in competing businesses, as competition between 'vendors' is another cancer in the community from what I can see.

I hope PF got his apology, and I'm saddened you never got one from him. Life's too short for disharmony. One weapon in our arsenal for decriminalisation is how open and peaceful the little shroomy guys make us - so we should all make an effort to get on and drop the egos.

Anyway, bygones and all that. PF left a beautiful legacy, and it is testament to your good character you feel the way you do despite getting it off his ego.

Happy new year to you, too, brother. X

Personally, I think in memorium we should start a movement with the same initials, PF called Psychedelic Freedom which seeks to gain acceptance for the responsible use of the "big four" psychedelics:  Peyote, Psilocybin, LSD and DMT containing plants/fungi/cacti, preparations and decoctions.

Now THAT would be a tribute!!!

Wow, this is sad, and yet if I was him, I'd be resting happily, nay, damned grinning like a fool in my grave, knowing how many people have followed the PF tek, and thinking on how many millions more will use it in the years to come.

Rest in peace, good sir.

Ryche, I see you're still showing your insecurities.

Chrome, I just found your email bouncing in one of my old cpanel default webmail accounts. It was awesome to hear from you! I remember the mead you sent. It was delicious. I'm carrying nootropics and cancer fighters these days. Pm me your addy and I'll send you some Adrafinil, or some Centrophenoxine, or some Reishi, whatever you want.

I'm saddened to learn of the news of PF's passing. While I didn't know him personally, I always respected the way in which he carried on. He did things his way. The lucky one's are able to do that.

Feels a bit strange dredging up a ten year old thread. Tough to read this one without a few tears. Billy was a my friend/mentor for a long time.
Good to see a lot of old friends posted though. Hopefully a bump will drag a few out of the lurk and they'll come back and visit with us.
Anyways, Billy has been on my mind a lot lately. Coming up on ten years since he passed and another flashback from a PE origins thread instigated digging up some old pictures and memorabilia. I was going to start an 'Ode to PF' thread, but my search for some old pics eventually led me to this thread. No place better to start a PF Museum than here, I'm thinking. Maybe chat with some old timers.. and educate some new comers with some history.
I'm still digging, but I'll kick it off with a few pics that I've already shared with the Tribe.
First.. the device Billy used to make every syringe he ever sold. If you bought one from him, it came out of this somewhat complicated but very effective contraption. Billy loved inventing. Not just in mycology. He even went so far as to invent things for medical use. He had a special way of looking at things and doing them simpler or more easily.

The whole device assembled.

Glass petri with a mesh riser to catch slightly dispersed spores. The combination of the riser and his spore solution were the trick to those awesome syringes.

The foil cover is used while the spores drop. Helps keeps the moisture in.

With the foil cover off the vented lid allows the spores to dry.

Once dry, the petri is removed and solution is applied gradually. Making literally hundreds of syringes at a time. His tools came with it. I have to admit. The paddles are awesome for scraping spores.
I'm pretty sure those prints in the pics are PF Red spores too. Only Yachaj aka Ranonar (the OP) and I had them at the time. BTW really good to think about him again too. He was working under PFE (Psilocybe Fanaticus Europe) back then. I've always considered him the brother I never met in person from across the pond. We did have some good conversations at Mycotopia back in the day.

More coming! Let's see if I get in trouble for starting an archeological dig and show & tell in the forum before proceeding. :hehehe:

Fucking tight. You know I didn't know he passed until today... I know right. I always thought I might have a chance to say something to him in passing through a thread or something. The stories that I've heard and gathered are epic. Kinda like a ken Kelsey of the mushroom scene, real cowboy type if I'm picking it up right, in way maybe. Either way cool to see you bump this chosen one. Can't lie at one point I thought you were him ha, idk some sort of confusion somewhere
Recently did a PF giveaway because I do believe the genetics are resistant to bacteria because of how bred out it was on BRF.
Very cool jars, and when did he start doing those like 20 years ago ha? Fucking crazy.

Ide love to see more! Even if I have to beg your for it personally ha.

Man, I think about him a lot still actually.  I never ordered from him but obviously that was how I grew from '04 till I evolved to bulk.  I still have the original(or whatever was current in '04) copy of instructions I printed off the internet.

Very cool to see some of his gear and to hear from first hand experiences, thank you chosen one.

I always dreamed of writing a book about all this, just for the sake of history really, so guys like him and many others don't get forgotten in the world of competing ig accounts from dudes I've never heard of.

Billy was kind of like a seventies version of Buckaroo Banzai. Jack of many trades, with a knack for invention. Played music too. He was talented enough to bring a smile to your face.

He was actually the one that gave me my nym.. though he didn't realize it until some years later. The nym was taken from an email when he sent me the first PF Albino culture. He got on a fancy spiel saying "you are the chosen one, keeper of the sacred albino."
It was about a year after that when he released it accidently. He mixed up the spore stock and sold a few hundred syringes. Though the duties were passed on the nym stuck.

This is one of two hoods he had. Cut him some slack on the spelling. We were pretty buzzed and I caught him by surprise asking for an autograph.
