Sclerotia Harvest - P. Galindoi ATL Golden Nuggets * 8
    #15371036 - 11/14/11 08:04 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I wanted to post a sclerotia harvest up on the boards, I feel there aren't enough.. and I found them highly encouraging when I was getting started on the sclerotia species...

An isolate of P. Galindoi ATL was used for these harvests.  The isolate was one of 35 sectors removed for testing, I selected this strain for its small but very numerous stones it creates.  When culturing it out on agar it produced a very prominent yellow/tan mycelium color band in its growth... the same color stratification's that P.Galindoi is typical of on agar culture, but this isolates banding color was nearly 3 times the width of all 34 other isolation's I cultured.  It is my belief that this color banding layer of the mycelium growth is predominately where the sclerotia begin their formation, on petris and in spawn...

Anyways, this strain creates hundreds of pea/chickpea sized stones in the spawn bags... with the occasional golf ball+ sizes... the stones tend to cluster and grow together creating a "styrofoam" looking nut in the end..

My other strains that were selected produce larger, better formed stones, but fail on the weight of stones that this isolate can create.

A typical bag from this isolate will create 400 - 600 grams per 5lbs of fully prepared wheat spawn, while my larger stone isolates of galindoi will come in at around 300 grams/5lb bag.

Anyways, here's a few photos of harvesting a bag of stones..

This is what I've put together as the most simple and cleanest way to harvest my stones.

I've put together a simple frame that fits one of my tubs and lined it with a 1/4" mesh screen.  It is very simple, but makes it a hell of a lot easier to bring your stones out of the grain.  Simply jiggle it, crumble your cakes, jiggle it some more... the spent grain that falls through the screen is then spawned to your bulk substrate of choice.. It can do a 5lb bag of colonized grain is 5 minutes with a little practice, and depending on how deep you want to dig for the last dangling pieces of stubborn grain...

Wheat Grain, Soaked 16 hours, Boiled with a handful of espresso grounds, strained, surface dried a little more than I'd do for a cubensis (I truly believe stones preform better with a slightly lower moisture level, in my experience it gives a greater longevity to the bag before rot sets in as well as lessening the condensation levels for 6+ month runs)... each bag weighs 5lbs when knocked up.

Freed from bag

Minor crumbling to search for larger stones

After searching for the monster stones, I like to crumble everything down to about in between a shooter marble and a golf ball.

Looks like a nightmare to pick through...

A quick rubbing with the fingers is a fast way to knock off loose grain...

I then proceed to shake the tub for a second, all the loose grains just fall below leaving behind the golden stones...

Gold!

This strain isolation produces predominately smaller stones.. about the size of a chickpea... 95% of the stones form in the golden mycelial layer which typically runs from the edge of the container(mycobag in this case) to an inner depth of about 2-3"... the grain from that point to the center of the bag tends to be tied very loosely with whispey mycelium.. the grain in the center of the bags tends to just fall away freely when busting the bag open, while the stone layer produces a much stronger caking effect, similar to breaking sheets of Styrofoam.. I theorize the mycelium is draining the central grains of water and nutrients and feeding the stone production in the outer ring of dense mycelium...

Dry faster... simple screen drying to knock out most of the water before making it to the dehydrator, plus the dehydrator is full anyways...

I love stones... powder, boil for 5 minutes in 12oz water, make your favorite tea, steep for 15minutes.. consume... nothing better...

Screen lifts off...
I once spent a Lord of the Rings Marathon going through one of these tubs after 10 - 5lb bags of harvests... I was meticulous but stoned, I managed to recover 150grams of stones that were small enough to fall through the 1/4in screen...

This is perfect spawn... just add your favorite substrate..

Here's another bag being harvested.  I tried to capture the variations in mycelial growth by breaking it in pieces.. the lighting worked on some and not others... the photos with the more "golden" hue to the substrate are the better representation of the actual colors.

That's about it...
I have to throw out some praise for Sclerotia species.. absolutely fantastic.  I would love to see a more posts on others grows, experiences, and patterns of behavior from these strains..

Thanks for letting me share that..

Peace

I am just starting my first grows got some cambo on brf and 8 sawdust blocks of oyster and kings. I have read extensively on sclerotia but now after seeing all this I have no choice but to order some spores and get it going ! But in all the other threads I read they mostly say grass seed dilute coffee in quart jars... Those pics of all those bags woot ! Awesome !

I say make a list of grains that you would mind chewing on... then pick the cheapest one you could find in your area...

3 weeks of babysitting lightly after knocking them up, and then forget about them.. visit when needed..

These are all room temp, varying 65 - 75.. small condensation problems with this range, but with lowering the moisture content of your grain a bit from "optimum", I've seem to find a healthy balance.. the mycelium eventually crawls up the bags drinking every last drop of condensation..

Also, the bags were 4 months to the day from inoculation.

this is a great informative thread. I have hard wheat kernels and Psilocybe tampanensis, wondering if I should try this out.

Sounds like a recipe...

Staggering 1 batch in your cooker a week, will bury you in stones.. Grain LC is by far the best thing ever invented.. every other week start a new Grain Master or two, refrigerate them...
I can dry a pound out of 3 or 4 bags...

I like to make one gram(dried) teas on days off... its like a burst of energy with a dopamine chaser...

I watched someone make a tea with 20 dried grams, It was later dubbed "Two Sip Punch" and it leveled 15 people and made them all wanna go home from the bar and hide in their curtains.. ha ha..

Have you only worked with P. Galindoi ATL so far? I heard Mexicana A is the best variety. Is that true? Very nice work.

Thanks everyone.

I started sclerotia producers all at the same time, running strain isolation's on agar of tamp, mexA, and galindoi..

all my tamps produced some of the most amazing agar plates, mex's too.. galindoi's were nice and kicked out tons of mini stones on the plates.

I put them all into larger spawn runs of multiple isolation's to get a nice average for each isolation.. at the end of 3 months I harvested samples of each.

I have no doubt that I messed something up in my GLC's for my tamps and my mexA's, I believe it was not using a freshly sterilized water jar for my GLC.. but both my MexA's and Tamps had minor yeast contamination's -and this completely shut down their stone production although they both held their own full control of the spawn itself mycelium wise.. it was weird and a bummer.

But all my galindoi isolation's sailed, each producing a wide variety of differences.  After that I ran out of shelf room honing in on the isolation's I wanted to tweak more... and haven't re-awoken the other two stone producers.  I want to go back and get a good grow from MexA..

These species eat your shelf space...
