Morchella angusticeps(elata?)
    #1536607 - 05/10/03 07:41 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

So I visited a mushroom hunting friend today, and he told me he had a morel invasion in his garden this year. He got some shredded wood last year to cover the plant beds , and where he brough it out, morels came this year. Around 20-30 specimens he said. In fact, they were so many(at least for him and his wife) that he didn?t pick them all.
I took an old big specimen with me and I?m going to clone it, perhaps I?m lucky.

Very nice - did they all have that weird shape?. It's very hard to make an exact ID and I think M. angusticeps is an american species. At least they're not listed in any of my "european" books.

Hmm...you?re right.
It might be Morchella conica. (= Morchella elata)
It?s likely not M. esculanta, judging by the color.

On the difference between angusticeps and elata:

They're very similar... If you get a culture then we could compare it with american M. angusticeps. For example M. esculenta & angusticeps can be distinguished in culture.

At the NAMA foray a few years ago Nancy Weber was using the name Morchella elata for the Black Morels.

She's currently in the process of rewriting the monograph for the morels and false morels. In October she avoided using scientific names in her talk and called morels like that one Black Morels. Based on what she said it sounds like her monograph is going to move things around quite a bit and rename a lot of species.

That's a great (weird!) specimen. Based on what Stamets says in his book they're not hard to culture, just hard to fruit.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!

I?m not sure if this is mycelium or mold, it looks different than what I?m used to, but it doesn?t grow terribly fast(so it could not be mold).
