I had one but sold it after awhile.
The cool thing was getting any random .PDF document or book online (for free) and converting into the kindle format using a program.
You shouldn't buy books. You can pirate them.
Though now I would prefer an iPad.

Most are the result of the the Gutenberg project. Read about it.
http://www.gutenberg.org/
Many others are directly uploaded by the author who wishes to spread his work for the sake of idea exchange, rather than financial exchange (which is just yet another idea).
Artists create in order to move someone's mind in a way they have imagined: whether it be through visual media, words, sounds, etc. If the economic system of the world is currently arranged so that producing "products" with your abilities is unprofitable, it is more wise to criticize the system rather than the constituents.
My drive towards information is stronger than worrying about who gets which piece of the dollar pie.
And you don't have to be financially stable to write good material. In fact, some of the best literature in history was conjured from abject conditions.

All depends on whether they're dead or not for me.

I got my mom a Barns and Noble Nook last year for christmas. Wireless, runs a stripped down version of Andrioid OS and you can view photos, play games, read (of course) magazines in full color, surf the web and play movies and music.
It's pretty cool. Now Amazon has a color Kindle out, I wonder how it stacks up. If it's close to the same than they were a dollar short and a year late.

I just got myself a cheap Kobo E-Reader. I don't care about color, in fact I didn't even want it. I like the way the e-ink feels on my eyes.

Thanks for the feedback so far.
I havent even priced them yet so that will likely play a big part in what I decide to buy.
Rivers- that is actually what has inspired me to buy one. I have quite a few ebooks and stuff on my computer that I just hate sitting in front of my computer reading. Or having to take my entire laptop somewhere to read stuff. I would love to have a kindle with all my survival/ backpacking textbooks, all my chemistry books, ect.

Web browsing on the Nook is pretty good. Like I said, it runs on a watered down version of the Android OS, like most smart phones these days.
Never tried it on the Kindle and now they have a new color Kindle out, so that might be worth looking into.

Hear, hear! I borrow a friends Kindle 2 or whatever it is, it might be a Kindle 3...whatever. Anyway its black and white e-ink and that shit is the best thing to ever happen to books. Holy crap I love it so much!

Its electronic ink, foo! Actually I know next to nothing about it except that it feels EXACTLY like reading a paper book to me. That comfortable feeling that I just don't get with anything LCD or LED, its hard to describe. But its like reading a regular book, except that you can download books and turn the page with a click. And you can carry 100 books around with you and its basically awesome.

Try the Nook, it's more expensive, but it has a lot more capability and memory. It's awesome for reading Automotive magazines and the color resolution is flat out fantastic. Plus all the apps and you can add a sd card for more storage space.
My mom loves hers and I borrow it from time to time whenever I'm at my parents house to catch up on my favorite auto magazines.
