I used to use white soft wheat but it's alot easier to get barley. Is it anygood for grain spawn? I tried researching it but there's not much info.

I realize it is an old post but seeing there where no answers i thought i would throw in my two cents. I have experimented with many different grains (WBS, millet, wheat, rye, whole corn, popcorn ect) but Barley is still my favorite personally i find it the equal to rye grain in all ways but for me it is both easier to find and cheaper (under $10 for 25kg) at the local feed store. It generally has a moisture content around 12% and i have never seen it deviate more than 2% and i prepare it with a good washing (i have on occasion left it with stems and chaff and it worked fine) followed by 24 hour soak and then a brief simmering (10 minutes) and then let it sit for an hour or so (generally this takes the moisture content to about 50%) then dry it off and pack into desired jars or bags and PC Great grain as far as i am concerned. when you say let it sit for an hour do you mean in the water it was being simmered in, or to let it dry off?

Heh I saw your msg about using barley and I probably just being stupid and not knowing any better I'm curious if there's a difference between the barley you're referring to and the pearled barley you can get in bulk at WinCo I only ask because it looks like if I were to prep a grain this would be quite the desired approach if it consumes three times the amount of water to hold moisture that sounds great but my concern is I am only one month at growing and still have no fruits to show for it I just figured I would change up my grain from Uncle Ben's ready rice to this bulk pearled barley I did find one thing that mentioned that hold barley and pearled barley are quite similar but I don't know if they're the same thing as the barley that you're referring to please help and I believe you also said trades are welcome I have quite a variety of m.s.s. if you don't already have the genus

Google is generally better for basic topics like this, the shroomery is for growing mushrooms not for explaining grain difference.
But I'm grumpy so whatever;
Hulled barley, considered a whole grain, has had just the indigestible outer husk removed. It's darker in color and has a little bit of a sheen. Pearled barley, also called pearl barley, is not a whole grain and isn't as nutritious. It has lost its outer husk and its bran layer, and it has been polished.
Simple Google search.
