What is art?
    #1536184 - 05/10/03 12:28 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

No dictionary definitions please... this is a pondering session...

In order to qualify as art...
1. Must it be shared?
2. Must it be composed of both content AND form?

For me, art is something that can be experienced on an individual level (at least) or shared with others. I suppose the issue of meaning (given to an experience of art) and how this meaning can or is applied to our lives comes up...

3. Since anything can be art, is it even possible to distinguish what is art from what is not art?

This could lead to a discussion on the practical aspect of distinguishing what art is... "If everything is art, what is the point of talking about it in the first place?"
Well, I think this is an important point. If the experience of art is translated into a meme-like form (which is capable of being transmitted), then practically-speaking, art is the dictionary definition- namely, expression.

4. Therefore, if art happens in the forest and no entity is there to experience it, then is it really art?

Press '1' to reboot.

Ha ha ha... I know the same Physics question that goes exactly like that... but about sound....

That's a catch 22....  well about the sound its not....

Art is relevant to the artist alone...  If anyone else gets pleasure from it .. wonderful... if not ...oh well...  Such is the nature of art....

Art is anything...  you make a squiggle on a paper.. its art...  I'd say that any expression you make has artistic merit...

Who's criteria are we talking about...  I dunno....

None the less....  art is art.

Everything is art.

blah...  this post is free styled.... lol.

I'm going to bed.

"I'd say that any expression you make has artistic merit."

yeah man that's almost exactly what I was going to say..

In my opinion, art is the expression of the internal, externally.

edit (addition): but of course.. I make music in my brain all the time - is that expression/art? lol nevermind I'm just re-asking a part of Sclorch's questions

in my mind art simply is anything pleasing to the senses. wheather its a book or a forest. a guitar solo or a fancy dinner. of course this varies from person to person and thats the beauty in art its what you make of it. peace

How about this: it's just "expression" as long as no one gets paid for it, but when that happens it graduates into "art"

What if I sit down in front of a tree and paint it exactly as it is? No creativity is involved. Is it still art?

creativity would still be involved when you choose colors and mix paint. If you would make two different persons paint the exact same tree at the exact time of day from the same angle the paintings would still be different. Even if the two artists would be equally proficient at painting trees their choice of colors and shades etc would give the paintings a unique look.

coolest "Art" yet  :smirk: ! jp  . i would say yes and no. talking to my art teachers they agree that there is a descrpancy of what is art. and if you take it on the level that sclorch says. "The Individual level" than maybe you can see that art is simply your of something. But my art teachers do say that art doesnt JUST HAPPEN. that it HAS to be created by someone. and to say that art is anything, for purposes of finding some definition, is a little vague. For after all we derive our art from nature. I had this thought one time... i was like what is something that is art and science. and i thought... well shit. i would want to do that for the rest of my life if i could. AS a JOB! and my girl- friend said that maybe thats what Nature is. and i said... yes YES YOU ARE RIGHT! so this is what i think nature may be. but as farr as PUre art, in the realm of human experience. must be made by the individual. and it requires something from the inside to be taken to the outside.

but... What is art. i dont know. there are too many things! its Creation!

i think i remember murex saying something good about this... maybe? and Shroomism quoting bruce lee.

you created it didnt you? but maybe if you said that you just wanted to copy what you saw and that on the inside you didnt think it was art and you just wanted to trick people into trying to give into your trick. maybe it wasnt art. maybe it was just an illusion. lol.

Art is expression.

Anything created out of expression, no matter how un-likeable it is. As long as the creator is expressing themselves, it is art.

Are you saying you can manifest your spirit by mixing paint and choosing colors?

Oh, sorry.

1. It would be Ideal if it could be shared, but imo, not all art can be shared.

2. I really don't understand what you mean by this question. Art is anything from the written word to dancing. I guess there is content to all art.

3. See my post above.

4. As long as it is an expression of an individual.
