1 year old bridgesii sproutlings....how much water?
    #15358869 - 11/12/11 03:04 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

My baby bridgesii came in the mail wrapped in paper like this....

Here they are newly potted.....

my question is how do i go about watering them? I have a mister bottle that i could use or is it better to just put the pot under the tap and let some water in that way? and how much?

ive read that you should re-water when the soil is dry to the touch but how wet or moist should the soil be to be considered "watered good enough"?

For the last 3 days they have been on a 12/12 schedule with a full spectrum lamp and when i first planted them i gave them about 15 or so mist sprays to get them wet and make the top of the soil moist but by the next day its completely dry.

Any tips or guides for sproutling care would be much appreciated ive been searching the site with not much luck and google isnt really being much help either.

thanks guys!

You probably shouldn't have watered them at all yet. Give them a week so that any damage to their roots can heal. Watering right after transplanting can put them at risk for rot. After this time you can water them like any plant, soak the soil thoroughly, but make sure they have ample time to dry out in between. Watering to little will not hurt them, in fact it may increase their mescaline content.

I think I got my cactus from the same place you did.

alrighty. Well they actually sat in the package they came in for a week before I could plant them. So they did have time to heal before planting! Thanks for the response! And yah maybe its same seller looks the same. How are yours doin a month later?

Usually letting them heal before watering is a good plan. As with most cactus less or no water is better than some; you won't get miracle growth out of them if they're drenched. Since they're old enough, water them when the topsoil to your knuckle is nice and dry. Treat em like adults methinks.

They are large enough that you could actually let them go dormant too if you choose. That's a personal choice. You can go either way at this size with most lighting systems.

Watering could cause harm, but it usually will be fine if you have them under good lighting. It doesn't look like the roots were too disturbed.  But if you're worried you can always put them in a boiler room or somewhere dry where the soil will dry quickly.  From you pic, the soil looks porous and airy too, which is good.  But for the winter I would keep watering to a minimum even under lights because the soil tends to dry out slower.
