Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data Potentially At Risk
    #15352322 - 11/10/11 09:51 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Gabe Newell announced today that Steam's database and forums have been hacked. According to Newell, Steam's forums were defaced earlier this week, and further investigation led to evidence that the hackers had obtained access to the Steam database.

"This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information," Newell wrote. "We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating."

While the hackers may have had access to the data, it isn't immediately clear how much information they actually took, or if any of it has been used.

"We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time," Newell added. "Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely."

Beyond personal information, Newell also issued an advisory about Steam forum accounts. All users will be required to change their passwords the next time they log in, and Newell recommends changing the passwords on any other accounts that used the same password.

"We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password. We will reopen the forums as soon as we can. I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience."

Change your passwords for all online accounts if you used the
same password for Steam. Watch or kill your credit card.
Take any appropriate measures.

Steam wasn't hacked, their forum was. Unless your forum account matches other accounts or passwords you're fine.

Okay, so Steam may have been "hacked", but you can fuck off with your sensationalist bullshit. The fact is that "obtaining access" to those servers is not the same as actually retrieving any data. If they had done so, Valve would simply force a password change so they could sleep at night. They probably weren't able to copy any information of any use off at all.

Since they aren't requesting a password change that's good evidence nothing was actually compromised. Furthermore, even if you could actually offload a copy of that database, it would be useless without the fastest supercomputers on the planet to attempt an encryption crack; and even then it would still be useless because by the time you cracked it all passwords would have changed.

by this logic I have "hacked" loads of stuff. Peeking in is a lot easier than actually doing anything on a fileserver.

Blujay, why are you always hostile? I lost my hotmail account because of this, they were using my account to send spam. I assume they got the info from steam because the account was closed tuesday with all the activity happening monday. Shit sucks.

Yes, on the forums, because forum usernames and passwords were compromised.

Steam usernames and passwords were not compromised.

You're safe as long as the password you use everywhere wasn't in the steam forums (an excellent lesson as to why you shouldn't use one password everywhere).
