Rye Jars Stalling

Hello, I'd like to thank everyone for their generous nature when sharing info, it's helped me countless times.
My problem is with rye jars. They seem to begin according to plan but after innoculation and my first "shake of the jar" I've noticed no further mycelium growth. Does this sound like excessive CO2?
I use polyfill in the jars, but i wonder if maybe I've packed the holes with too much polyfill and thus restricted airflow. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any colonization at all? Do they smell bad? Are they too dry?

Yes, after 5 days there was 2 small spots of growth. I was very careful with my water/grain ratio, I don't think they are too dry. There is an odour, but I wouldn't say it is "bad". Temp. is approximately 84 deg.

I've noticed no contamination but they do have an odour about them.

What kind of an odour? Maybe bacteria or yeast. If the water is ok they should have grown a lot more but if there is contaminant in it you just spread it evenly throughout the whole jar by shaking it.

what water to grain ratio did u use, i did it exactly my first time and the recipe was off, maybe ur grain is drier than theres was, there's gonna be a smell of grain, kinda smells like tea to me, but is it a sour odour?

I used 1 cup of grain with 220ml of water. It's not a sour smell. [ would a sour smell indicate bacterial contamination?] The first batch I tried I let soak overnight and observed no sign of colonization or contamination. The 2nd batch [current] I did not soak, there was some initial colonization but nothing further. [approx. 16 days without further colonization]

sour/trashy/vinegary smell = bacteria (usually) wine/alcoholic smell = yeast (usually)
If it stopped growing when you shook it 99% chance it's contamination.

Would you suggest soaking the grain overnight before sterilising ?
