Hunt w/lots of mushrooms! (PIX...Fixed!)
    #1528286 - 05/07/03 07:21 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Well today was a great day for hunting... I found a ton of great mushrooms. Many of which I am unable to show today due to lack of time. I'll upload some more pictures when I get back from work!!

Start off with some delicious Horn of Plenty (Craterellus cornucopioides)

Here are some DRIED out Panaeolus *papillonaceus* growing from horse manure:
EDIT: Thanks Mitchnast for pointing out that they are not subbalteatus!

Here is Panaeolus campanulatus (Growing on horse manure)

Now for some Octopus Stinkhorns!! (Clathrus archeri)
This first picture is the actual egg-sack which they grow from:

Some random Orange mushroom I found growing from manure

Here is a Stropharia Coronilla

And a very beautiful unknown purple mushroom growing directly from the Oak log:

I found some of those purple mushrooms the other day too, I wonder if anybody could ID them...

Also, did you take a sporeprint of the purple mushroom? I'm taking one right now but I could save some time if you have.

Great photos, again. You still got 'em coming up.

Those Craterellus look good. They sure are hard to find, they way they blend in.

The purple mushroom fits the description of Clitocybe mutabilis (=Hygrophorus angelesianus). If so, the spore print should be pale and amyloid (an unusual feature in Clitocybe). An interesting specimen.

Happy mushrooming!

those arent pan subbs, the gills are way off, pan subbs SHOULD have whitish highlights on the gill edge, also the margin is wrong, these look to me like panaeolus papillonaceus.

more like these. notice the simmilar gill structure and margin

ToxicMan, where did you find information pertaining to Clitocybe mutabilis? I was having a hard time IDing it in Arora's book, and now looking through the index, he doesn't even have it listed!

I just did a search on google, with minimal results.

The only website which had a description on it said that it grows in conifer debris. This specimen, with the other 2 which I found were clearly growing from the oak log...it was very interesting to see such a fleshy mushroom growing directly out of the oak!!

Of course I did not collect a specimen to get to sporeprint. I might go back to the woods and try to collect one again. Maybe bring it to the University and try to get it identified? I don't know.

I hear you with those Horn of plenty's.... I found one patch, and then let my eyes ajust and then found about 4 others. I took pictures, looked up, and had to find them again because you can't see them at all. I was really lucky to even find them. I cant wait to cook them up because they are one of my favorites!!

Sh*t!! I frigging KNEW they weren't subbalteatus... My friend with me (who really doesn't know shit about mushrooms) kept telling me over and over... "No, those are subbalteatus, Im sure of it". Even though I was thinking... No way, those can't be.

The only reason I gave in to thinking that the were was because they were growing directly in the same area where I've picked subbalteatus all winter/spring... Hmm... I would definetly agree that they are not subbalteatus. Here are some older pictures which I took that clearly show a difference... Sorry, my bad!

Thanks Mitchnast!!

I found it in Matchmaker, a nifty piece of software.

Here's a link to an online copy. You can scroll through the species list to find the one you want or click on the "MatchMaker" drop down and select "Make a New Match" to enter the characteristics of the mushroom you want to ID. If you do the New Match bit, it will search through its entire database and show you the closest matches.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a photo of Clitocybe mutabilis anywhere to verify it against. But read the description and see if you don't agree that it sounds pretty good.

Happy mushrooming!

Ever try to plate out tissue from these mushrooms?

I'd like a culture of the octopus stinkhorn. If I ever see some freak ass mushrooms growing around here I'd be sure to take a sample.

Here's an addon to my previous post. Some other fungi which I found interesting. I was wondering mainly what the white ball was. Is it just a premature puffball, or what? It has spines, and was thick...I should have opened it up to see what was inside!!

Coprinus lagopus

Here's some black and red stuff (fungi?) which I spotted inside a dead oak log. The stuff was about a millimeter wide. The black ones almost looks like mini mushrooms!!

A brown mushroom growing from redwood debris. I just liked this picture a lot

Ohh I almost forgot about MatchMaker!! I used that a few times. I checked out the description and I do agree with you on that one. I wish there were some pictures that I could see.

Maybe MushroomExpert.com would use mine?

B_H: No, I dont have the tools to create a culture. It would be pretty interesting to see though. I dont get how the stinkhorns grow, because I didnt see any mycelium surrounding them, just the egg from which they sprouted out from!

Unless they were for show and tell I doubt that anyone needs to grow a stinkhorn, yet I too find them in nasty oil looking sludge along the edge of compost heaps and hay piles.

And then the dog stink horn in woodchip mulches here inthe Settle reagion.

they are real small and smell jsut as nasty.

Cool photo collection Angry Shroom.

P. s. Did you get your books?

Yeah, these octopus stinkhorns were along the edges of the compost heap. How funny.

They sure did stink too...

your puffball looks like the Lycoperdon perlatum that i find growing in my neck of the woods.
i'm no expert though, maybe someone else can give you a 100% sure answer.

Yeah, I'd say Lycoperdon perlatum (jeweled puffball) was a safe bet. If it was growing on sawdust or around/on rotting wood, though, I'd go with Lycoperdon pyriforme (one of my fave puffballs. They're quite delicious sliced thin and fried like potato chips). Congrats, man!
