fresh air
    #1534550 - 05/09/03 02:09 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

A friend of mine built a HEPA box but i only have 1 dual-port air pump. Each line is split into 2 thus creating 4 air lines. Each one of the air lines goes into a terrarium, where they have a tiny airstone attached to the end and submerged in a 1:10 peroxide/water mix. The airpump is on 24/7.

Is this enough air for each terrarium, or should he fan as well? 2 terrariums are in use right now, and they are being fanned. Is he unnecesarily introducing possible contaminants by fanning?

There's always a chance of introducing contams when fanning, but many people fan every day and never encounter any problems with contams.

Usually when you open up your terrarium you can smell if there is an excess of CO2. If you smell CO2, it'd be a good idea to fan.

I forgot to mention:

my friend does have a little (square inch) hole on the opposite side of the terrarium relative to the air bubbler. The hole is covered with a paper towel.

ya i didnt know you could smell it??? and regarding fanning, the more fresh actually=fewer contams because all contams that will grow on your substrates like stale stagnant air, if you keep it fresh, then you will have fewer probs, as long as everything is 100% colonized and your casing is sterilized and ph balanced

This is enough air exchange if the air is actually exchanging.
Here is the setup my betta is using

He drilled about 50 holes in the lid of his rubber maid container.
Then he put a .3 micron filter on top of the lid
A hole is drilled near the bottom of the container and the bubbler hose is pushed through the hole. The bubbler is left on 24/7 and the cakes love him for the fresh air.

If there is no way for the CO2 to get out of your terrarium, then your not really doing the cakes any good.
