I'd love for the human race to be able to coexist effortlessly, but we just haven't earned it yet. We've got to work it out. If we were to coexist effortlessly by some cheat like this, we would become animals, and the entire human experiment would have been for naught. Don't forget that the animal kingdom is a cruel, sinister place where the brutal and the deceptive always win.

I think that effortless coexistence may be in our future, but for the time being, we need this egoic nightmare, because it drives us to do extraordinary things.

I'm failing to see how our emotions stem from our sense of self... I think the brain regions associated with emotions could be activated even if we didn't have a sense of self. I don't see how lacking a sense of self would prevent those brain regions from being activated.

i think emotions are better understood from a psychological model than a neurological level, as from a psychological level we can change our emotional experiences. when you look at triggers for emotions, they're usually previous moments of experience. like anger (often) involves someone harming you. without a sense of self, there's no one to get mad. the conscious trigger for the anger is gone. likewise, jealousy - the psychological make-up of that requires both a sense of self and a sense of other. i think some emotions might still be experienced without a sense of self in a different way... like sadness. but in this case there wouldn't be the mental clinginess of self-pity associated with it that imo is the actual cause of suffering.

so i think emotions (for the most part) have conscious triggers, so if you change the conscious experience by removing the sense of self, the trigger changes and for most emotions is rendered inert. this seems to be validated by the accounts of mental progress people make in psychotherapy or spirituality, that emotional landscapes are altered through conscious intent and are not just hard-wired brain functions.

I think it makes sense that it would reduce disputes, but I don't really agree that it would increase empathy...

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another; if there is no self, and no other, then how can one understand and share the feelings of another?

Also, if emotions (i.e. feelings) stem from a sense of self, and if nobody has a sense of self, then there would be no emotions (i.e. feelings) to understand and share.

you're right, empathy was a wrong use of wording i think, as that deals with emotions. what i meant was that the mental distance between people would be removed, and i figure that would reduce behaviours that are typically seen as opposite to compassion and empathy. but the mental experience of this may not match empathy for the reason you said.

All of it. We're better off with no history IMO.

Prohibition of drugs. I would make people forget that we ever prohibited drugs.

Bad parenting and heterosexuality.

Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

Do you really need to get rid of both? Either would do the trick independently.

I would erase the idea of country.  I think it would be so much nicer if we all lived life as if all the world was one piece of land that we cohabit with every other living being.
