mushroom identification for paper
    #15332538 - 11/06/11 07:10 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Im writing a paper in my biology class which we had to go to a nature reserve and observe a number of different species for. one of the species i chose was this mushroom, mainly because mushrooms are cool and easy to write about, and also because i think its a pretty beautiful specimen. can anyone help me identify it? i found it in a section of deciduous forest close to a fallen tree. it was at Iroquois National Wildlife Reserve in upsate NY on september 14th of this year. its kinda hard to tell from the pictures but it was really small, only about an inch long. also, it appears to me that it was infected by another fungus because one side of the cap was rotted looking and had white fuzz on it. am i correct this is a contam of some sort?

It looks like a hygrocybe species to me. Maybe something like Hygrocybe conica

Probably http://www.mushroomexpert.com/hygrocybe_minitula.html due to the debris stuck to the cap.
