Awesome find dude! If you find you're chewing dirt I recommend taking the time to clean every one of your finds as you pick them. If you are in a hurry, it's clearly hard to do. On the other hand if you have tons of time, clean those puppies and enjoy being in the woods woohoo!

You're right. Next time I'll bring a knife and brush to clean on the spot. I cleaned them all this morning but it takes much longer after the fact. Fortunately I tasted no dirt in my chanterelle scramble this morning.

Thanks for the advice.

Found some blewits today. First time picking this species. Are they as tasty as porcinis?

Sweeeet!! I found the same thing today growing from a log in cottonwood forest.  I suspect Hericium ramosum.

Going out tomorrow with a group of folks. Hopefully we find some good edibles!

I am not planning to eat them. No worries.
It was a rash decision on my part to call them blewits without knowing 100% for certain. Sorry about that.
Currently trying to work it out in the Blewits ID thread.
And I'm gonna check on that patch location in a couple weeks to see if I can't maybe find some mature specimens. It will make it a lot easier I'm sure.

Anyways, here's a different set from today that I believe to be legit Blewits.
Keep in mind these were very vibrant and purple at the time of picking. The color dulled pretty fast in just 8 hours.

Yeah blewitt. It should retain its color after slicing and cooking, and leave a lilac spore print. Cortinarius leaves a brown spore print and a "cortina" spider web like veil, and reveals brown inside. The blewitt tends to be a bit lustrous with a shine and maintains a purple margin. Stick your nose in there and see if you get a citrus orange scent (they say frozen-orange juice concentrate which I agree with but not everyone can detect). Congrats on finding those! I still haven't had the luck up here to pick those up. I've only found them in San Diego.

Dude, I've never seen blewitts with decurrent gills and bulbous bases like that. I don't think those are blewitts.

Dude, you're making me a bit nervous with all the hasty naming of things and throwing around of $$ signs.  Please tell me you aren't selling anything other than obvious edibles.
Tricholoma is a difficult genus, and Tricholomai magnivelare does have some very notable features, but it also has some bad look a likes. Do you have any more details to add on the pile you're thinking is matsutake?

Those other mushrooms turned out to be a different Clitocybe species. I threw 'em out.
These, I'm going to follow the same protocol. ID then decide.

Hahaha, that's awesome! It's the mycophile's trick or treat .

Blewitts? Oh fuck yeah! They are superb in many ways. They don't have an explosive flavor like some other choice edibles, but from a culinary perspective, they are amazing: they retain their purple color when you cook them! Imagine pairing them with purple cauliflower, cabbage, beets, purple onions or something. It's gorgeous!
