Synthetic Filter Discs
    #1533245 - 05/09/03 01:23 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I was taking a look at the Synthetic Filter Discs that mycosupply.com sells, and I like that they are already cut to size, and filter down to .3 microns so I dont mind paying more for them.

But how do you use them?!?

Can you inoculate straight through them? I would assume I would be using a lid as well, and not just the filter (as to not loose too much of my water content) to cover the jars.

Whats the best way to allow air exchange, and not allow the jar to dry out? How many holes should there be?

Thanks from the noob!

You don't really need to buy those filter discs. A friend drills four holes into the lid and puts some breathable tape(sports tape from Wal-Mart the sticky kind) over the holes. Also, put a inch of dry verm. over the cake to filter out contamination. So here is the steps -
1. Fill jar with substrate
2. Put an inch of dry coarse verm. on top of the sub.
3. Put lid on and drill four holes
4. Take lid off and cover the top of the jar with foil ( so water doesn't get into the sub. while PC ing
5. Put lid on the jar and tighten the ring.
6. Pressure cook 15psi for 45min

If you already have them, then put the disk in place of the foil and put the foil over the holes. Just make sure you cover the holes.

Those discs are perfect if you are using a grain substrate. They are not needed when using the pf tek as the brown rice flour does not need to breath as much as the grain. If you (or a friend) already have those discs, try to follow SixTango's (6T) WBS tek. 6T's WBS tek It's not as hard as you think, and produces a lot nicer results than the pf tek.
