I got the kind of jars w/ 2 piece lids- ring & bottom piece. i cant get the holes to lign up when i screw on the lid so i'm going to put 2 layers of foil under the ring and screw it on tight then put foil over that when i boil, then im going to take the foil lid off & poke through the foil underneath w/ the syringe to innoculate. immediately after I will cover w/ the foil lid. is this ok? thanks.

to get the holes where you want them screw the lids on all the way then put the holes in em with a hammer and small nail
I wouldn't really recomend using foil in place of the lid piece but you can try if you like, i'd be extra sterile while attempting this...

Confusing!
Did you drill through the lid and the ring... near the edge?
If you did...just drill through the lid.

thanks roadkill- yes, i did make the holes through both near the edge. i dont really see how foil under the ring is much different, it makes a pretty tight seal. i already busted one jar by trying to hammer with the lid on

Using foil the way you described WILL work. Anno, Mushroom Guru, used it that way, in this Tek: Anno version PF Tek

No need to put holes through the ring. Take the lid, turn upside down (rubber lip up) and hammer your holes near the edge of the lid over a few magazines so you don't bust anything. Then, when you PC, keep your lids rubber edge up and tape the holes.

hey Perk what is the reason for turning the lids upside down? i dont get it. afoaf was thinking about using a lid with a 1" or so hole in the center, which is covered with tyvek. then make 3 small holes around this center hole and fill these with a drop of silicon for a self sealing injection port. this idea sounds very sterile and most promising. BTW has anyone tried this?

Or, use plastic lid w/holes
My foaf covers the lids & upper jar with coffee filters, as an exterior dust cover.

When using metal lids, and higher pressures for PCing, the rubber seal can melt causing the lid to stick to the top of the jar. That's the only reason to flip the rubber edge up. If you can avoid using metal lids though I would recommend that. Take a look at 6t's lids above. My buddy does the same thing and it works great (tyvek really is the shit).

I've had really good luck drilling a hole in the center or the jar lid pulling polyfill through that then covering with Al foil and pc'ing then sticking the syringe through the polyfill. recover with the AL foil and stick in the incubator for a week or 2
