Google to index Facebook comments * 1
    #15316429 - 11/03/11 03:29 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Search engine Google now indexes public comments made on websites that use Facebook, Disqus and other add-ons.

The move means that all comments on any publicly visible website could show up in Google search results. Previously, search engines were unable to read comments because Facebook, Disqus and Intense Debate used programming that was not easy to read automatically.

This meant that comments could play any part in a website’s search ranking. Now, however, the web tools that Google uses to trawl the web and index content are able to read comments that have been made using Facebook’s Connect add-in for other websites, as well as other equivalent services.

Some website owners have declined to use add-ons for comments that do not help their search rankings, but as Facebook has become a more popular tool for interaction outside Facebook.com itself, Google has effectively been ignoring a growing part of the web.

The update means links featured in comments will also enhance websites’ standing.

Although comments are not likely to immediately appear high up search results, specific searches for them will bring them up.

The move also means that posts and conversations in comment threads will be easier to find. Search queries using terms such as “commenter name” will now bring up comments made across the web by named individuals.

Interesting, just searched my name on google and I saw one post from facebook indexed. Luckily it was just on the Primus page.
Yeah, this is good info to know.

I kept thinking about starting an anon page for myself to coverse with just friend and not family. I guess it's a good time for that.

I just searched mine and didn't find shit.  Then again I have mine set to friends only for everything.  My foil hat is still sitting in the corner.  I'm not important enough to give a shit what people see anyway.

Also interesting about Germany

Data protection official accuses Facebook of new privacy breach

Data protection officials in Hamburg are accusing Facebook of a new breach of German privacy laws by using so-called "cookies" to track users even after they’ve cancelled their accounts.
Court tells Google how to avoid liability for blog posts (25 Oct 11)
Facebook to give German state privacy exemption (21 Oct 11)
Microsoft's Streetside better accepted than Google's Street View (10 Oct 11)
The northern German city-state’s data protection agency suspects that the social networking website places a so-called "cookies" on users’ internet browsers that can keep tabs on them for two years after abandoning Facebook. The cookie can also be read by plug-ins on other websites, according to the organisation.

“Arguments that all users have to remain known after they leave Facebook to guarantee the service's security are not acceptable,” the Hamburg data protection director Johannes Caspar said on his agency's website.

Facebook has always acknowledged that it places cookies on computers. But it insisted in a statement that it was not tracking users’ movements across the web and it was seeking an “open channel of communication” with Caspar and his colleagues.

Internet services, such as Google Street View and Facebook, have come under increasing fire from German officials in recent months, amid accusations that they’re consistently breaking the country's privacy laws.

Schleswig-Holstein officials have been particularly aggressive in pursuing Facebook, even declaring its “like” button violates the law.

In response, Facebook has said it is agreeing to a voluntary code of conduct in Germany to protect user data.

Yeah I have mine locked down pretty well also, I just don't want some possible employer to see I made some drug comment. Then again, I really don't because I don't want family seeing it.

I searched a few friends names and some came up empty handed but others came up with results. I think it is just how you use Facebook. The ones with results post like whores and "like" and comment on public facebook pages.

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."
