Food Saver bags
    #1531035 - 05/08/03 03:59 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I found a post with a guy using food saver bags in a p.c.
Why cant I get them to work?  I have tried twice but both times they faled.
I am using straw as a substrate and using it for the sole purpose of producing oyster mushrooms. cough. The edges are double sealed.  The bags are out of the water and there is also a polly filter.

Food saver bags wrapped in AL foil will most certainly withstand 15 psi

I use them to store syringes in. Recently tried to use one instead of a quart jar (ran out of jars and had some grain left over) It didn't work so well I sealed it but didn't remove the air. Poked a syring through the side of the bag taped with black tape and threw in the incubator.

Tape didn't hold well at all for some reason and ended up turning sour on me.

Next attempt I'll try putting a little poly fill in one corner of the bag seal it pc then innoculate through the polyfill and see if that works better.

They may survive pc'ing without the al foil but I'd hate to be the one scrubbing melted plastic out of the pot should it fail

So far two a tempts and two failures. I will try the aluminum foil this time. I will also keep it above the water level. The water seams to make the seems fail.

food savers will survive PCing, keep them away from the sides and off the bottom...there is a major problem with them....breathability....they have none, you have to find some way of putting a filter on them to allow gas exchange, coffee filters arent that good for the job....tyvek works well....it's best to apply it before it is sterilized....mycobags are better and cheaper....even after shipping

Black Tape...use it on your car....temps over 120 degrade the adhesive to a gooey mess, it's virtualy useless for anything other than an emergency fix....

Bags made of HDPE plastic (oven bags, shopping bags,zip-loc containers) can stand PC temperatures. LDPE plastics (zip-loc bags, tupperware, opaque trash can liners) will melt. Read the label on the box to see what kind of plastic you have. Also, do not let the bags touch the side of the PC.
