Rather odd growth from kit...
    #1530247 - 05/08/03 08:18 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hello! I?ve grown PF-style 1/2 pint cakes and fruited before no problem... trouble is that i did my first batch of 4 cakes, fruited em, and now have no more in the pipeline that will be ready anytime soon so I?ve bought a mushroom kit (pre-colonized plastic container, probably like a pint and a half total volume) to tide me over until my other jars are colonized and ready for fruiting. Basically, the kit seems to be growing all right, except that some of the mushrooms look rather... how to say this..... elephant-man like? Particularly the one that seems to grow up, then have a head, then that head seems to have another mushroom stalk growing out of it off into mid-air.... a lot of others are showing their "gills" as it were already, in a sort of odd flared-up sort of way.... is this indicative of any problem with their environment, or is it just the shrooms being weird for no reason? They are in a tupperware container that is light-sealed except for a window at the top, a fluorescent bulb is above that a foot or so, there is a plastic bag full of perlite which is wet with water and a 250ml bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Thanks for any help! :-)

So is it possible that perlite is giving me too high of a humidity?  As i've read that it often creates 95%+ humidity.... what should i do, simply fan more often or what?  cheers...

>for cakes

nothing

>for casing

put it in another terrarium or make another part in that terrarium with no perlite.

Is the casing to have *no* means of humidification then?  I mean, if i put it in a separate terrarium without perlite, and i'm not spraying, then won't it get well below the 85-92% relative humidity required?  Thanks again for your help!

fredd,
no pics today, but on my fish's second flush did the same thing sorta. the stems grew amazingly fast and the caps kinda started to pull away from the stem, but like half of the veil seemed to stay stuck to the stem and the stem curled really bad at the tip, keeping the cap from forming like normal. i dont know if this is just from a weak strain, or what caused it, they were dunked in the fridge for 24 hrs, and i know the humidity is near 99% in the terrarium, but im sure it will eat the same. =) has anyone else seen this type of growth?

you spray the sides of your terrarium .not the casing you need to keep the rh 85-92..

For casings, it seems to work fairly well with no humidification at all. Of course, that applys to a pretty moist climate, like the Pacific Northwest USA.
