hi guys,

I have a worm farm and i use the yummy juices for my "special" garden and the plants love it! What do you all think about utilising this high nutrient stuf for mushies in some way???

where - how - why? hehehe my turtle currently does fruiting from cakes and never attemped casing yet... thinking about it though!

so would my turlte use the soil from the worm farm in her casing ... lets say 1/2 verm. and 1/2 worm compost stuff... my turtle has a cake that is refusing to fruit so she thought about attempting casing for the first time.

What are the benifits of peat moss too?

ah ok so next time my turtle makes up the jars she should use worm compost instead of brown rice flour then follow normal casing tek after colonised?

People have used mixture of worm castings & straw with success.
Do a search for worm castings - there are many posts about it.

i would disagree on this one Lana,
if worm castings are used for substrate in the jars it's good, better even... but the key it to read the teks about bulk cultivation with worm castings and straw.

basically your turtle will be layering with the stuff in the caseing....
and to answer your question about caseing, i think it's wonderful and the only way to go :smile:

Now to jump your thread with a question of my own.....HOw ImPortant Is it to pasturize the worm castings??? anyone with experience here?

Ya beat me to it. . .
Worm castings that are purchased pre-bagged from good companies and such are more or less 'finished' worm castings and scarcely need to be pasteurized. I have a hyperactive worm bin that puts out a lot of material. Once I tried this stuff un-pasteurized and it was a complete disaster. The first and only time I had a mite infestation. Insects/arachnids are often a big problem with home-grown castings.
In addition to little critter issues, there is variability as to the 'hotness' of home-grown castings. Some stuff really isn't *done* yet, and will furthur compost after being laid out and spawned in a tray. This not only stinks, but can create high temps and unfavorable bacterial proliferation.
The best bet with home-grown is to try to get the most 'completed' castings from whatever type of worm bin you're using, allow them to dry to below field capacity, then hydrate up to field capacity and pasteurize. One should usually add straw or other ammendments, as straight castings can easily get mucky if you're not careful.

I didn't get shit from Mushroompeople's castings.

I tried cubensis, and Coprinus comatus, and got zero growth both times.

Stress 'good company'. Most of the cheap ones are diluted or otherwise poor. Really good castings can give sticker shock.
