Umbilical hernia and squats/deadlifts

My mate had a small umbilical hernia, small 5mm tear just above the navel...
he wants to get back into lifting, he has a fair amount of scar tissue and the doctor has told him to take it easy, and didn't put any mesh in there when they did the operation.
how safe would he be getting back into squats and deadlifts/strength training in general..?

If the doctor told him to take it easy then he better now be deadlifting. Because deadlifting and squating is the exact opposite of taking it easy.
Maybe he will have to wait a long time before he can lift but that should be ok for him. Its better to wait and heal than to fuck everything up, pay more money for doctors appointments, and possibly have to wait even longer to lift.
Tell him to go to doctor and ask him directly. When can I deadlift and squat heavy weights?
Also... Maybe he should think about using weight belts in the future? Maybe that could help with a hernia situation. The idea of a belt is to stabilize the trunk of the body for safety reasons such as avoiding back injuries.
When I was hurt with bicep tendinitis my therapist told me that there comes a point in some mens lives where lifting anything below 6 reps is just a way to boost your ego. Some people just aren't cut out for it and they dont need to lift a 1-3 rep 500 pound deadlift. I took his advice into consideration and I have been following it. I follow it for the sake of my body. I am not an elite athlete and so I dont need to do everything that is mega extreme.

I should have mentioned he got the hernia doing a deadlift ( )
He said the doctors have been very vague in giving him much information, I'll pass this onto him but yeah I don't think encouraging it can be a good thing... he's always been mad keen wanting to get into powerlifting and whatnot since I did and I know if he finds out he won't be able to do it he will get pretty wrecked over it (bit of an emotional guy, on valium scripts etc, self esteem issues)
I know even like light squats and deadlifts but ehh what's the point
maybe he should do crossfit or something
does a hernia have the chance to fuck you up permanently?

I am not sure if they fuck you up permanently.
Well honestly I would be emotional about it too. When I was out for 10 weeks due to bicep tendonitis I was a train wreck. My self esteem was low, I felt like shit, and I missed exercise. Exercise can mean a lot to a man.
Crossfit would be a good one. I bet he will lift heavy again. As long as he lets it rest and takes precautions such as weight belts or approapriate weights. Dont push it too hard.
Again, ask the doctor. See an exercise physiologist or an orthopedic surgeon.
good luck to him

I'm guessing he was not applying abdominal pressure when he lifted, just used his back or something and blew it out, may have been slowly building up to it... who knows, but he did it doing deads, I'm guessing just bad form... always apply that abdominal pressure, and I always lift with a belt, just to be super safe.

He could've been applying too much abdomen and tore it. Have him strengthen his abs, cross fit would be perfect, and he can probably slowly get back into lifting. How many powerlifters and Olympic litters you think haven't had hernias? They happen, they can be painful, they can be lethal, but proper stretching and full body strength training helps hugely.

yeah I think he was just underprepared and was trying to lift too much with bad form... he went in without any instruction or anything and just started doing them, I think he was trying to catch up to me a bit too quickly...

I don't use a belt... I'm not plannin on it until I am lifting super heavy stuff. I see it as a crutch. Like using straps. Why use them if you don't need it. I see highschool kids at the gym I go to wearing belts for d/ling 200lbs, squating 150, and benching 200... WTF?!

I do not use straps or gloves. I too see that as a weakness. I use my belt for 315+ in DL, for safety.
I had a guy the other day say thats pretty good for not using straps. Yea i don't use straps.

I use my belt for my working sets only, at the recommendation of Wendler.
Sounds good to me, though. I don't wanna risk it... Just for piece of mind really, it can be kinda painful in a deep squat though cuz I got a bit of belly flab so it pinches my rolls a bit
And yeah I see kids in my gym too coming in with weight belts wearing them for curls and stuff

I dont use straps or gloves either. And I am against weight belts too.
The way I see it is that if you need a belt to support your torso then you shouldn't be attempting the target weight anyways because your trunk is too weak and not quite ready for the stress of the lift.
The only damn thing I use is chalk.

The thing is. I dont "need" it. I can lift heavier weight without a belt. I just do it for safety is all. I do not feel comfortable lifting heavy heavy DLs without a belt. I actually rarely use belts for squats BTW. Its just the heavy DLs and actually standing military bar press. Those 2 things are what i use it for.
And yea. chalkk. love a dub it.
