Offshore Oil Rigging and $$$

My first plan to make a career or get my salary pay is the Navy as a rescue swimmer.
My second plan is Oil Rigging.
Apparently as a starting offshore oil rig worker you may earn 45-55 thousand a year. Typically the workdays are 14-20 on and then 20-25 off. I think this would be a great job if you ask me. That would be so great to make 50,000 a year and have periods of 20 days off in a row. I think I read that oil riggers typically only work 7 or 8 months out of a year. That is incredible. Another plus is that when you are on the rig you will get insurance, free food, and free board! Thats lots of money saved!
I read that higher ranking officials on the rigs make up to 100,000-150,000. I also believe there is positions that go higher than that.
http://www.oil-rig-job.com/oil-industry.html
I am really considering this as a career. I like the fact that its physically hard work. That would be right down my alley. I would probably get my ass kicked for a few months but I would definitely enjoy it I am sure.
I think that working 15 days in a row and being off for 20 would be a great opportunity. That would leave room for another job. I could work on the rig for 15 then work at a sit down desk job for 20. That way I may be able to earn possibly 70,000 a year. Maybe I am overestimating myself as it will be alot tougher than I think. But its an idea. If I was going to do something like that I should probably do it while I am young.
I think that since I have a bachelors degree that I would be able to advance in rank and possibly and hopefully make 100,000 one day.
I wonder what the best way to approach a job like this is? I would bet that taking some kind of mechanic or machinery courses in a nearby community college would benefit me alot.
It seems that oil rigging jobs are in demand these days. Thats good for me.
Does anyone have any experience with or related to this job field?

Here's the BLS info on that field. It's for Texas (where I assume you are, but you can easily change it to Louisiana, or wherever the rig is).
http://bls.gov/oes/current/oes518093.htm
Looks like Beaumont, TX or Lake Charles, LA are your best bets of finding a top in that industry. They're about an hour apart.
Good luck!
Also, be safe. The reason they pay these guys so well is all too often it's very dangerous. The plants blow up, chemicals leak, hands are caught and/or crushed in machinery, etc.

Did someone mention to you being a roughneck is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world?
You're basically like a bug, you can be squashed by tons of force, gassed, burnt at the slightest screwup of a coworker or yourself.

I did not know how dangerous it was. I only heard it was very hard work.
It seems worth in considering the amount of debt I owe. If I could do it for 2-3 years without dying then I would be golden.

You're working with larger than human scale equipment under often very dynamic and depending on the location of the rig, poor weather conditions. A lot of that equipment will sever a limb or crush you like a bug if you're not careful.
I know someone who works in oil and has been on platforms, did all the drills, almost crashed with a helicopter when attempting to land etc and he insists that actually being on the site where they drill on a platform is one of THE most dangerous working conditions to be under. Plus, in international waters you can be worked harder than laws of a particular nation allow, that happens a lot too.
If you are going to make it your career, you're going to have friends who died or got completely disabled on the job.
You're going to have to be someone who can work long hours, work hard and got balls of steel to keep cool and deal with not just sudden situations of extreme danger but also the oil rig equivalent of cabin fever which can lead to explosive or tragic social situations.
Not saying you shouldnt, you may be the right man for the job, but the way it was described to me its up there with being a Navy Seal in difficulty and risk, especially in cold weather conditions.

I dont plan on making a career. I want to pay my school loans off and then go back to school. lol

I was dabbling into trying this out myself.
Go on YouTube and type in a bunch of shit like oil rig accident, explosion, work safety... etc I'm sure you'll find some interesting information.
I came across this guy's page a while ago. http://www.offshoreguides.com/default.asp It's very informative. If you want more info... send me a PM and I'll tag you a link you shouldn't have.
After all the research I have done... it looks like oil drilling fields... pollute waters and land... giving rare cancers to nearby tribes/towns if they eat or drink from the land... I have not found one story yet where they were successfully able to be rewarded for proving the oil companies were the cause... but this could potentially be an additional risk if you're breathing the fumes and get it splashed in your face/body all day.
The risk is real. I've read many stories about lost limbs etc most of the time as the result of a fucking moron teamate. Just like going to war, how can you fight a battle if you don't trust your own guys? and for 50-70k to start as a roughneck.
Here's a couple movies I assume you know how to download - might be worth your while educating yourself a little more on the bigger picture:

It comes in at #14 with 24 fatalities/yr per 100000 workers. Police, firefighters, coal miners, roofers, airline pilots, sanitation workers, etc, are all more dangerous. The top three are fisherman (129 fatalities/yr per 100000 workers), loggers (116 fatalities/yr per 100000 workers), and farmers (40 fatalities/yr per 100000 workers).

Still it beats orthopedic surgeon and hairdresser in terms of risk. #14 is still quite up there.

I work offshore; I got into the work from a buddy I served in the Marines with.
I work in production. You have rigs that drill wells and platforms that produce them. Production is where it is at.
I work a 7 on and 7 off rotation and have also worked 14/14. Each day is a standard 12 hour day, with over time often occurring. Right now I work an average of 120 hours in a week. I don’t mind because other than work, fish or sleep there isn’t much else to do.
As for earnings, 7 years in and working my way to OIM I am earning between 160 and 170 a year. I also have safety and production bonuses and stock options.
It is a good profession for me, it is not for everyone and you got to accept that. You work in heat, cold, wind, rain, whatever is out there when you get the call you go and do.
Also don’t mind the eco people, they may want to talk bad about oil and oil companies but they can’t get enough of our product.

I actually went and applied for a job as an offshore roughneck straight out of high school at 18 years old. Suprisingly I got offered the job but couldn't pass the physical fitness test. They send you to the doctor first for a full check up including xrays and everything. Its a very through check up. I passed that part and then they send you to a warehouse setup for activities that are designed to put you through the physical demands required while working. They strap a monitor on you before you start the task. I was sitting at a table filling out the paperwork when the person hooked it up to me and said sorry to tell you this but it is highly unlikely that you will pass because you are already borderline failing while sitting here. I'm like...wtf, I'm 18 years old, played football and lifted weights in school. Sure enough I failed the first test because of my heart rate. They give you two or three months to get in shape and try again. I was shocked to hear I was basically out of shape or that's how I took it.
I went home and made a daily routine of situps, pushups and running. By the time I went back for the second try I had been doing 100 pushups, 250 situps, and had a 7 mile route I could run with ankle weights on and a couple bottles of water with me without stopping. I failed the second test with an even higher heart rate. I hadn't even broken a sweat when they stopped me. I was so mad I was like wtf dude I guarentee I can run this whole course with whatever weight you want...but it didn't matter.

wiccan no disrespect but are you a woman? roughnecks try to make themselves sound like james bond when they talk to girls. . .
It's hard work but honestly not THAT bad, if you do your part to keep your rig tweaker free in particular (a great method is to drown or otherwise murder the tweaker but that can ruin your safety bonus)
If someone goes to work doing this, though, they should have a general plan to do it to maybe 35 and then either be semi-retired, ready to re educate, move into management or move into a secondary field - the pilots, divers, electronic techs, etc on and around the industry all make very good livings as well. There are some really cake jobs on a rig. or focus on moving from roughneck to actual driller, drillers basically have it made

If it's like the places I'm familiar with they have an actual rig set up at their training facility and make you do different stuff on it

If anyone is still looking to get into oil labour - I hear they offer something like $24 to start on service rigs, not sure about roughnecking on drilling rigs.
Toughnecks (Precision Drilling) is hiring - if you pass the phone interview and get through the 3 day orientation you're all set to work. http://www.toughnecks.com/
You'll want to get your H2S certification lined up - you can always call and ask when you need it by. Keep in mind, they do drug tests!

Not to derail the original post, but where did these facts arise? How would they be adjusted regionally if they are 'global figures' to be fair to places that don't log/drill/farm/fish/ect., and who published the results you cite? I'd imagine being a corner-boy in Baltimore would be a bit more dangerous than being a logger in Los Angeles. I'm even more curious as to how the occupations are listed, many jobs now are hybridized.
