Literature with drug themes
    #1517151 - 05/03/03 07:17 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

For some reason I really like literature with drug themes. So I was hoping I could get some suggestions.

Some I've read:

Less than zero - Brett Easton Ellis - American yuppies on cocaine etc
Nature strip - Leonie Stevens - 80s alterno Melbourne youth culture
Monkey grip - Helen Garner - 70s Melbourne - bout a womans relationship with a junkie
H - Christiane F - autobiography of a heroin addict and child prostitue in 70s Berlin
The Mother of David S - anonymous - can't remember much about this one
Go ask Alice - anonymous - 50s diary of teenage girl experimentation polydrug use
Praise - Andrew McGahan - guy drinks way too much -bout his relationship though they experiment with acid in the book.

Yup... I'd put a big vote for 'fear and loathing in las vegas'.... those first few pages are amazing! Great book.
There is also all the Terence McKenna books (more non-fiction though i guess) or Jack Kerouac's books (lots of pot and alcohol, 'on the road' is a classic anyway regardless).
Also... 'Junkie' by William S. Burroughs - more about opiates i guess but still interesting.
Ill check what else I have and get back to you...

cheers,

ganesh.

Wierd Like Us-My Bohemian America- By Ann Powers. I Just picked this up at the library because it said my bohemian america on the cover. It's not spectacular but it talks alot about drug use and her opinions on what drugs are good- pot, acid, and i belive coke, although i wouldent agree on that one, versus what drugs she thinks are bad-primarily heroin and speed. It is an interesting read.

The first two Carlos Castaneda books talk about drugs quite a bit.

And one of my favorites

Acid Dreams-The Social Histrory of LSD, the CIA, and the 60's.(not sure on the author, title might be slightly of too, but acid dreams is right, it's a great book)

The search for the Manchurian canidate is a pretty cool book about the CIA's search for a truth serums and mind control drugs. talks alot about them using LSD and Marijuana in experiments.

Naked Lunch is another great Burroughs novel.. he says in the introduction that is is based on Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal," but about drugs. Great cut n' paste style, but be warned: this book gets a little wierd. If you have a low tolerance check out the movie instead. There will always be a spot in my library for Uncle Bill.

Mmm...Some great ones off the top of my head..."The Man who Made it Snow." Thats the book the movie Blow is based on, but the book is 100X better, and true to boot.

The Alice B. Toklas book...Thats a tripped out one...And yeah, any of HST's stuff...
