I would say the opposite, actually. Especially if you have never found ovoids. First go to the places they are reported to exist so that you know for sure there is a chance of finding them. Then when you do find them you will know exactly the sorts of habitat to search for back in central West Virginia.

Ya after 2 seasons, (this is the third) Ive yet to find them. I was just wondering because my transportation is really limited right now and a drive to the closest observation is about 1hr ( in WV travel time ) away. I'll keep lookin in my area until my cars fixed. Hopefully i can put a dot in the center of WV!

I have plenty of Knotweed in my area. But, from recent and past finds, its not necessary for oviods. The banks of the rivers Ive been hunting are steep, but I recently found areas which arent as bad. Im hoping my persistance pays off. Also been looking in sandy areas that I avoided in the past . Dont know why.

Crokon, Finding and searching the "right" habitat if there is such a thing at least gives us something to focus on even if we come up empty -- However, don't forget to look at the chip beds near the parking lot as you're about to head home because you never know...

there is a mulch bed in the local park that is only 20ft from the river. It seems like every year they replace the wood chips but I dont know if they are actually replacing or just covering up the old stuff. Sorry if im bogging down forum. I just thought it would be better to post here than in the Offical thread. Thank you all.

Fall is the driest time of the year in eastern north America, so that probably has a lot to do with the difference.

I'll definitely be watching my patch for fruiting this fall. It's been growing plenty of mycelium all summer so at the very least I'm expecting a good spring. For those of you who are trudging around in the deep bush getting eaten alive and not coming up with any ovoids, try paying more attention to landscaped parks with paths by streams. I searched natural habitats all spring and found nothing. The only time I found any ovoids I just stumbled upon an patch a few miles from my house in a suburban park (SE PA). It was in a drainage basin that takes the water when the mulched paths get washed out during rainstorms. I transplanted some myc and I've found a few promising looking wild spots that I'll check in the spring in order to hopefully find a back-up patch, but if you're getting frustrated with the wild hunting they DO grow in more suburban environments. If you see any wine-cap stropharia, you should keep your eye peeled extra carefully, as they seem to be a good indicator species.

I wonder if they grow in Scotland, I can think of a few local places that seem ideal.

I wouldn't be so sure about that... A friend of a friend planted many beds of ovoid's several years ago all around the quad cities area. Most of them were in old hardwood forests near the rivers, on islands, swamps etc, you know, nice humid ovoid locations. He even knocked up a local park boards mulch supply, lol. The beds did Very well and over time he claimed many of them had actually spread to adjacent areas and fruited on fallen branches and sticks and whatnot. There's no doubt in his mind that they had spread by spores as well. Anyways, he has given up his jonny shroomyseed hobby as of recent and hasn't maintained the beds for a couple of years now. It might be a shot in the dark still but looking in the river valley in that area might be worth a shot. Also, he always said they fruit right after the yellow morels are done.

Around now would be a great time to get out there in look, especially in the Northeast because we just had rain for the last week and a half.
