Newfoundland Mushrooms
    #871477 - 09/09/02 09:43 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I was just posting to say that I live in St.John's Newfoundland and we have naturally growing shrooms eveery year! The season starts soon and I was wondering if any one new ay information about these naturaL WONDERS, I know it may sound vague but I really would just like to discuss these shrooms as I know them only as shrooms. I will be picking soon (soon as the first frost comes) and would also like to hear any inquiries about spore prints trades, etc. I know this is the wrong forum but I am excited and rambling. Thanks

Hey Snipes, it's always nice to see a fellow Newfoundlander!

Mitchnast is right, Newfoundland "shrooms" are Liberty Caps (Psilocybe Semilanceata). I have a suspicion that the LCs that grow here are a strain unique to the island, though, since the descriptions I've heard of off-the-island LCs are slightly different. I'm also interested in knowing whether or not folks elsewhere in North America have to wait for the first frost for the appearance of LCs... they appear on a strict schedule in Newfoundland.

The season started earlier this week, so I'm going out picking today. I'll see what I can do about getting some pictures of the little beasts.

Hence my suspicion that they are a unique strain of P. Semilanceata, Niggy.

Hunting was a bust today, lots of horse poo and a few little yellow mushrooms of unknown species, but no Liberty Caps. We're heading out after the next frost; hopefully I'll have some pics of Newfoundland LCs in their natural habitat from that trip.

Ahh...I need to know a lil more about these...Do they need alot of rain? Is morning dew enough to make them grow?

Thanks!

As far as I can tell, the melting frost/morning dew provides ample moisture... a good picking morning is a sunny one when the frost is melting!

I live in PEI and the same type of Libs grow here. Every year people seem to go out pciking at first frost, this is going to be my first year trying to get some though. Can you guys give me a little advice where to find these little wonders? Do I just listen for the first frost to be mentioned in the forcast and then go out looking. I was thinking the rain we are supposed to get later in the week might help get them out as well, but I've been told the first frost is the way to go. Can you give me a description of where to find them and a physical description of the mushroom? thanks

Hey!

Your best bet is to find yourself an experienced hunter to show you the ropes. Someone who's been out picking before should have a few spots in mind and can point out the correct mushrooms to you.

At any rate, if you do end up going out on your own, there should be some good descriptions of LCs somewhere online, along with a multitude of pictures. Just don't eat any before you have them definitively identified!

As for possible locations, if the PEI LCs are anything like the NF ones, you'll find them in horse/cow/livestock fields, baseball/soccer fields, or even lawns. Cow fields always work the best for me.

And as far as timing goes... morning of the first frost, or for that matter, any subsequent frosts! Just get out in time to beat the other folks who pick your spots.

so our crazy east coast libs do look similar to the pictures of libs I'd see online? I'm going to try to find someone to show me the ropes, but if I can't I'm damn well gonna find some anyway. I'll post some pictures here before I eat them though.

Good call. Best of luck!

We've had frost, so I'm assuming I'll probably be out picking before you... I'll be out whenever we get another one (it got quite warm here over the past couple of days, and all the little shroomies disappeared). I'll try my darndest to get some polaroids and put them up here.

Cheers!

I agree with nathanw - look at newly sodded lawns, graveyards, golf courses, heck even peoples lawns, i have found an ounce dried already this year just in my neighbourhood on peoples lawns...

It doesn't have to be only nights with frost. they continue to grow slow and if you rape 1 field it may take a few days for them to come back, and you want to be careful when picking them you do not want to uproot them from the ground, rather you just snap it off from the upper stem. but you can always pick them in other fields days to weeks without another frost, the colder the nights tho, the more they are stimulated to grow out the magic mushroom everyone seems to love these days.
