Cordyceps ophioglossoides (updated with new myco porn 23:th october!)

Not easy to spot on the ground but they were less camouflaged in the green moss.
I didn't know what I had found before I got home and started investigating, if I did I would have digged for the deer truffles.

Are you sure they aren't just earth tongues? Did you dig one up and look at the host?

Geoglossum umbratile?
Cool. I didn't think there was other mushrooms that looked just like this.
I don't know. It seems like these two are often misidentified, I don't know what photos I can "trust" as being the real deal.
All I can say is that my mushrooms was yellow/light colored at the bottom when I pulled one up and also had yellow flesh, kind of "rolled" like a scroll inside.

Sounds as though it may have been growing from a chrystalis or something similar.
Cool

Could be, stem looks like it, but could also be Ompholina.

Yes it definetly could be Ompholina or perhaps even Mycena.

Quite a mystery so far then... I hope some TI's could clear this up.
Geoglossum difforme is very rare in Sweden , so far only found in 10 places, and only three active patches as of 2005. (ref) I don't think I'm that lucky.
Cordyceps ophioglossoides on the other hand is more common. And look close at these two photos from wikipedia: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/Cordyceps_ophioglossoides_01.JPG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/Cordyceps_ophioglossoides_02.JPG It is showing the same "warts" as mine. And they have yellow colored flesh and lower stipe. (also found in almost every photo found with google image search)
But...
Geoglossum umbratile is also a candidate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Geoglossum.umbratile.-.lindsey.jpg and it also have warts... or it is a case of bad ID on wikipedia.
and Geoglossum fallax is even more common http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Geoglossum_fallax.html http://www.swefungi.se/PAGES_DH/Geoglossum_fallax.html but looks smooth? and not yellow http://www.bio.utk.edu/mycology/atbi/Photos/12500to12599/12530.jpg

If your mushroom has yellowish to orange flesh on the interior it is Cordyceps ophioglossoides It looks like golden threads at the base, hence the common name: "golden thread cordyceps" The black earth tounge has black interior flesh.

Thanks!
So, it's safe to say that many Geoglossum photos on the net are misidentified Cordyceps ophioglossoides?
Or do they all have "warty" texture on the "cap" ?

Could it be a xylaria species? That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw those (excellent!!) pics. I'm not sure if there are any with those warts though. Did you make a cross section of those?

I don't know but some things point away from that genus. Most xylaria seems to be growing from hardwood and have white flesh. (mine was found in a pine forest btw) http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/club%20and%20coral/species%20pages/Xylaria%20polymorpha.htm http://www.hlasek.com/xylaria_longipes_ab8196.html
Damn, those sac fungi seems to be really hard to identify macroscopically.
But I found a better name for the small "warts". It's called perithecia. Within each perithecium are asci with ascospores.

Yes, daunting, isn't it? But I think I may have seen that species in a book somewhere...I should check it out later tonight when I get home. Iirc, it's in one of the first 40 pages of the G.J. Keijzer mushroom photo book.

I guess I'll have to go there again and dig and try to see if they are growing from anything, and take better photos of the colors and insides.

I digged and found some truffles, I think it's Elaphomyces granulatus. Now I can be sure that it is Cordyceps ophioglossoides ( = Elaphocordyceps ophioglossoides )
Also took some more photos:
Check out this closeup, a real beauty:

And super closeup on one with "white dots". Seems like the perithecia exploded when the asci was released.

Thanks Bob, It felt really great to find some Cordyceps. Similar to Paul Stamets when he finds Cordyceps capitata for the first time.
It must have grown about 100-200 infected Elaphomyces in this part of the forest where I found them. When my eyes adjusted there was more and more...
Habitat: Old pine forest with thick mat of moss on the ground, and below that dirt containing clay/pine needles.
