Don't Make This Easy to Make Mistake with Your SGFC
    #15176892 - 10/04/11 02:01 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So I went ahead and made a SGFC exactly to specifications (1/4 inch holes every two inches on all six sides of a clear tub, with 5 inches of soaked then well drained perlite).

I have a very good analog hygrometer that has been calibrated, and works perfectly.  Initially, upon making the SGFC about 3 weeks ago, the RH read 98% during the day and dropped down to about 85% during fanning, only to immediately go right back up to 98%.

Upon waking up in the morning, the RH would always read 100%.

Then two days ago, since I wasn't sure how often I should be re-wetting the perlite, I went ahead and dumped a couple of pitchers of water onto the perlite right in the SGFC, and proceeded to mix it up using my hands to make sure that all of the perlite in the tub was evenly moisturized.

I could see the water draining through the holes in the bottom of the tub.  There would be no drips at all, then all of a sudden a huge stream would come out, then no drips, then a huge stream, repeat, repeat...until no water was draining.

So I then I went ahead and put the hygrometer back into the tub.  Up until a couple of hours ago (when I fixed the problem that I'm about to tell you), the RH would then never go above 85%.

I couldn't figure out why.  So I went to stir up the perlite again, only to see that about an eighth of an inch of water had pooled up in the bottom center of my SGFC.

Apparently, when I used my hand to mix up the perlite when I added the water, I had accidentally "mashed" the perlite into the holes on the bottom of the tub, basically clogging almost all of the holes that are on the bottom.

Now, it wasn't an air/water tight seal, but it was definitely enough of a seal to not only not allow all of the water to drain, but also was preventing the natural air flow that an SGFC is designed for, that increases the RH of the SGFC.

To rectify the problem, I tilted the SGFC enough where I was able to use a screwdriver to clear each and every one of the holes on the bottom of the SGFC by poking it through each hole (I had really jammed up some of the holes too apparently, as I had trouble getting it through some of them).

Now, a couple of hours later, the RH of the SGFC is now back up to 98% and there is no pooled water at the bottom of the tub.

So, a lesson to all, make sure you don't accidentally jam up the holes on the bottom of your SGFC by pushing down too hard on the perlite when mixing it.

Thanks for posting the fix for this.  I also suspect you didn't rinse the perlite enough under running water before putting it into the terrarium.  Perlite has a lot of dust when it comes out of the bag, so it's important to always rinse it well before using.

Good point about being careful not to mash down when fluffing up the perlite.  I always used to slip my fingers through the perlite to the bottom, and then slide them along, lifting the perlite as I went.

and i did that as well but after diging trenches and making more surface area and i guess from the weight of the perlite 90% of the holes were defintley plugged with not dust but actual granuels still 100% RH so maybe it fixed the problem
true results tho in the morning
