New method for inoculation of tree stumps

Update on the method: See http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5748196#Post5748196
I'm searching for an easy way of inoculation tree stumps and had this idea:
Prepare wood spawn of a wood inhabiting species( in this case Flammulina velutipes), spread on the surface of a freshly(a few weeks) cut tree and cover with cardboard and attach the cardboard with a tacker(or nails). I hope the cardboard will be enough to protect the mycelium as long it grows into the wood. The method is highly experimental, it?s the first time I?m trying something like this, let?s see if it works.

Good luck.Hope it works out. Did you contemplate putting a few deep scratches or axe hits below the spawn and cardboard to give it a helping hand into the stump?

I have used this method for Plerotus but just put spawn in between stacked logs, like sandwiched(logs 6-8"diameter/1' long)and stacked 4 high. I then use simple masking tape to seal the joint. This works OK but not as well as culturing onto hardwood dowels and implanting then waxing over the hole. Looks cold,is that snow? Maybe a Tyvek cap for the stump over the cardboard? Good luck and keep us posted my son and I are interested in that species for a science project WR

Hmmm, it looks good, in my area I would have to cover it in some way to keep it moist depending on the rain in the early to mid spring. So you may want to think about that, it may or may not be a concern. I just learned that I have over 50 acres of freshly cut (late summer and fall of 02) poplar and birch stumps in northern MI, so I have been thinking about stump culture as well.

I would add that in your picuture you are inoculating the stump on the center. I think you would want to insure that the area between the bark and wood is covered with spawn. Thats the sweet spot for the fungus and the mycelium grows much more quickly through it than it does in the heart wood.

Fungi perfecti has a new pr0duct called sp0red 0ils
The sp0red 0ils are put 0nt0 an actual chainsaw, and then the cut is made at the base 0f the tree stump

The cambium layer is where all those yummy tree juices are for the mycelium to spread through WR PS Anno, have you fruited this mushroom in a pf cake style? My son says he'd like to do an aquarium in his room with "glowing mushrooms" I think it would be a great way to get him started in sterile(eh,quasi ) culture procedure.

That?s what gave me the idea for this method. I don?t have a chainsaw and I don?t own a wood, that?s why I?m trying it this way.
BTW, why d0 y0u use a 0 instead of an o? It?s a bit ann0ying....

I would use an adapted tek I do for wood lovers:50/50wbs flour+alder sawdust and verm. This makes great cyan spawn so I am hoping it is also suitible for Flammulina.Come spring We'll give it a try for his science project WR

I went back to the stumps and some of them, namely the fresher ones are showing mycelium growth.
I inoculated many more stumps this weekend, on many I just stuffed the wood spawn in cracks in the stump that were caused by the falling the tree. Let?s see what happens.

No, they remain outside. This is an outdoor growing method. Many mushrooms hunters claim that they sucesfully inoculated stupms in their yard just by throwing remains of fresh Armillarias on them. It sounds improbable but I really heard about that many times and from different sources.

I use a simple method lol.I just take a grain jar with me on my hunts and pour, push or sprinkle the colonised spawn into cracks crevisies and some times just rub it into course bark. I really should get a staple gun.

I did think about it, but haven?t manage to take an axe with me yet. But I?m going to next time. First I have to prepare some fresh enoki spawn.

Ive been mainly working with Shiitake on oak, as the elms are covered in enoki here already :-) do you think shiitake will grow in zone 8? I guess they will, as much of china is zone 8. I have been using my mushroom hunting knife to peel a bit of bark back a few times, but normally just look for crevises that are already there. Shiitake wont colonise live oak right?

F. velutipes fruits in very cold weather, even under the freezing point of water. Also the mycelium doesn?t seem to mind very cold temperatures, but of course the growth rate is minimal in such conditions. Usually, you?d go to inoculate stumps after the snow has gone.
