Pint Size Jar Thread
    #7117569 - 07/02/07 01:33 AM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all, few questions about Pint Size Jars using PFtek method (BRF)

Q1: What is a good, extremely successful method of mixing substrate to create 1pint PFtek jars (BRF, Verm, Aqua). Since Pint jars run the risk of drying out I need something that is proven successful. So far my research has turned up two methods (this is for 12 jars):

A) 12 cups verm, 6 cups BRF, 6 cups water

B) Take verm, fill to max field capacity, then mix in BRF.

I don't know of any other methods so any wisdom on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Q2: Sterilization in a pot should still be for 60 min. with 1 inch of water? I have read yes and no in different threads, looking for definitive answers please.

Q3: How do I shot web?

a) is fine
b) adds too much water

Q2). Yeah. That's fine.
Q3) isn't even an English sentence, much less a question.

Thanks man, so you don't think I will run the risk of drying out using the A) method?

Absolutely not. That's the standard. Follow traditional PF tek, do the whole dunk and roll bit, and you'll be more than hydrated!

Q1) B.. i always fill to max capacity before adding BRF.

Q2) you CAN boil, but if i were used id invest in a pressure cooker, esp if you plan on having this hobby for awhile.

Q4) thats really up to the individual, i havent even started reading about casings yet.. im going to practice and toy with PF tek for atleast another 2-3 months.

No. You started with cakes, fruit cakes. The experience you gain will be highly worthwhile.

no, i only do 1/2 pint.. but max capacity for vermiculite is max capacity.. you're not changing the ratio of the substrate, just the amount.. i wouldnt imagine it would cause any problems.

if you get a good colonization success rate with your jars say 9 out of 12 survive, i'd take one or two and try casing, its pretty cool i started out casing right off the bat and did well-

don't add h20 to verm's field capacity that'd be too much water

Susceptibility to bacterial contamination, mostly.

Colonizes alot slower as well, a 2-3 week jobber turns into a 5-8weeker IMO

With the risks being A) dryout due to elongated colonozation and B) oversaturation of water leading to infection/longer times. Im going to have to go with the non-saturation method. Thanks to all for their help, I will keep a journal thread once day 1 hits (hopefully tomorrow)
