Seriously considering a career in mycology

Hey!
I only recently started to grow my own mushrooms, and I am fascinated at everything I learn about how the mycelial world functions.
I am one of those people that can't decide what kind of career I want, but seeing as I'm currently so interested in growing and identifying mushrooms, I'm considering following a mycology-related career path.
Are there any professionals that can give me a little insight as to what mycologists or mycology-related employees actually do on a day-to-day basis? Are the necessary studies hard to get past? How passionate were you about mycology before actually engaging in getting a degree?
Basically, should I myself pursue this career path?

The course work is incredibly hard. My girlfriend is in a graduate level fungal biology course right now. I've taken a look at her book, it's insane. Start studying biology right now.
That being said, if you're interested in it, go for it. Just know that it won't be easy.

There's http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page yale and a few other schools offer free online courses, and a google search will probably give you like 50 more resources

That's a little discouraging... How's your girlfriend holding up? and is she some genius, or simply a well disciplined student?
btw, I'm studying biology 1 as I type this

She's holding up alright. She (and me) are probably around average intelligence for a college student. She (and me) are not well disciplined which is why she's having trouble with it. It's insane amounts of reading. Next time she's over I'll scan some pages out of her book if you want to see it. Just let me know.
Don't get me wrong, if that's your passion, go for it. I think it's awesome. Just know that you are going to need to be dedicated. You have a good start with studying biology. Keep up the good work man. You're on your way. LEARN it, don't just study it. Get all the biology down pat so you can focus on the fungi when you get there and not on catching up on biology.
If you ever get too tired with the nitty gritty biology go pick up a book that renews your intrest in fungi. Go mushroom hunting, grow some edibles, read some Paul Stamets. It can be discouraging when you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just remember why you are doing it, and it sounds like you are doing it because it is your passion.
Good luck brother. Keep me updated.

you could always grow edible and start selling that, no degree needed

Wow! my mind is blown... Mushrooms killing insects (in the most awesome way ever!), eating up oil, creating fuel, healing diseases... Thanks for the link, and especially your support. I'm not sure I feel ready to go through the studies, since you say they are very hard and that I am already struggling in my college science program, but this definitely renews my interest in the field.
Seriously, since you're expecting an update from me I'll try to spend some time looking into the actual courses/material. I can't say I feel passion at this point, and I might just be going through some sort of omg-mushrooms-are-awesome phase because of my last, and ongoing grows... then again, I might have made the first step in finding what I want to do until I retire.

You know what, that's an awesome idea! I already planned on trading some of my GT prints for edible ones once I can access the Shroomery marketplace. Do you know how I would go about selling edibles though? I mean can I just go to the local grocery store and offer to provide portobellos? Seems to me like they would refuse, in fear of getting poison ones from me.

IMO the most practical mycological career is picking and selling gormet wild mushrooms like truffles, morels, matsutake, chanrelle etc.
the only other things i can think of are growing edibles or highly complicated research for medical or other mycologic applications.

I think by saying mycology he means biological research at the university. Otherwise maybe he means mushroom farmer?

Don't put stock into drug-related things for the long term. If you're just interested in mycology because of psilocybin mushrooms, it's kind of a poor choice.
However if you're actually interested in ALL kinds of mushrooms, I'd say go for it.
Question: would you still study mycology if you couldn't study psilocybin mushrooms? You could only study non-psychoactive ones?
I just don't want you to start studying mycology at a university and only want to talk about shrooms and what your last trip was like etc.

It will take 4 years before he actually specializes in fungi, so he has time to weigh his options. For the undergrad he will just be doing general biology studies.

I'm about to complete my undergrad degree in bio. Trying to decide whether to go for graduate school for plant pathology or to focus on mycology. Hopefully I make up my mind before I get out of the Peace Corps in a couple years.
Good luck OP!

Rest assured, I wasn't planning on studying shrooms, I was only thinking of working on legal mushrooms and mycology work. I just don't know what kind of jobs I'd get in this field.
I really want to get good at growing edibles though, I absolutely love mushrooms (talking about legal ones here) in omelets, soups, and sauces + mmm. So having an unlimited supply would be nice, and selling them would fund the hobby.
Do any of you think I could simply sell my edibles to my local farmer's market/has anyone here done it?
