unity is a motherfucker. I'm using linux mint now, and while I had no SERIOUS gripes against ubuntu, the unity was just TOO much of a pain. I understand flash touch screen mimicks but honestly if I wanted that I'd get an android phone. to be completely honest, I think I heard that android is based linux.

anyway, linux mint is nice. the command are simpler. or maybe the commands aren't simpler, but maybe it's simpler to use linux mint because of the fact that I believe unity makes the command line more intense. why?? well if everything you try and do with the gui FAILS then you have to rely on the command line almost completely. while I appreciate the fact that the command line in linux is more in depth and detailed with more options then windows, I must admit the command line in windows is usually pretty simple and straight forward.

if I wanted EVERY SINGLE THING with linux to be command line based, I'd have become a programmer, stripped off the front end gui, and just used linux command line. but anyway the nice thing about all the distros is if you know how to do that, it's possible with any linux distro

but the linux command line is too much of a nightmare to me to want to be that involved. then again best buy is a nightmare

only reason i dumped the ipod is cause the library management and transfer protocols are too archaic (and that is putting it VERY nicely). i still love the click wheel.

from what i understand the click wheel is going away, that they're going to axe the classic...  apparently people want some gimmicky touch device w/ flash memory more than a large library in their pocket

yeah unfortunately that seems inevitable.. the classic and the Cowon x7 (which I own now) are the only two hard drive players left. there is Archos but i really hate them.. theyre enormous. not pocket friendly.

there isnt really anyone catering to the audiophiles out there.

dude this linux mint is sweet. it's like it looks like windows but acts like linux. I really think if linux wasn't so fucking incompatible that people would ditch windows and mac os x. I really bash os when I compare them to linux quite a bit. in truth I think mac os x and windows is awesome.

none the less, a free os that let's you do anything is pretty incredible. I should start a thread talking about all the things you can and can't do in different operating systems and start an operating system war. but I don't feel like it

aside from itunes and other stuff like that, can you pretty much make any mac or windows program compatible if you take enough time to make it work. alas, the problem with linux being non commercial, is that most commercial programs made for windows or mac just won't work in linux no matter what you do. hey if you want to just use the internet and never get a virus though, I'd recommend linux any day over ANYTHING if you absolutely know for sure that you will never ever want to install anything ever. open office is kind of nice as well.
