Food Dehydrator?
    #1525382 - 05/06/03 08:15 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Is a food dehydrator ok to use for drying? Or does it affect potency too much?

Food Dehydrators with a NO HEAT option work fine, all I've found was a dehydrator at wal mart that goes down to 95 degrees... I don't know if that would effect potency or what, but usualy you can find some sort of dessicant at Home Depot, or somewhere.

I bought 2 excalibur dehydrators a couple years back...they have a no heat option but I have not noticed a lodd in potency at temps as high as 105...but if you want cheap and effective...try a fan and a screen....$20 for the combo at home improvement stores....

Test it with a thermometer ~~ to insure it is actualy 95F (or less). Most of them, are higher than that.  Snigger........they lie. Just to screw with you.

Just disconnect the heating element. If you want to keep the food dehydrating capabilities, add in a simple toggle switch to turn power on and off to the heating element. All it takes is to snip the wires twist the ends together with the connections for the toggle and a little electrical tape.
During the week it is a mild mannered food dehydrator and on the weekends it is a lean mean shroom dryin' machine.

much cheaper...but $12 for a fan is less than $29 for a sunbeam....a roll of screen is less than $6....pulling one from the window is even cheaper....

The reason I bought the Excaliburs ( $179 ) is because they were a large capacity variable temperature dryer that has the element and fan in the rear, regardless of what I dry, it's simple to opperate and easy to clean... I made beef jerkey for my pop one day in it and it took 3 minutes to clean and sanitize because the element isnt on the bottom....another benefit it the tray system that it uses, it gives me like 15 square feet of surface, a 26 hour timer and the way the tray system is devised I can remove every other one and dry larger items, if it were feasable and wouldnt take a month or break a tray I could dry a watermellon whole....

It's a very versitile machine, but I wouldn't recomend it to everyone and wouldn't own it if I were just drying mushrooms, I prepare all sorts of stuff in it....and when it can be built on a much larger scale for the same money, it's not a bad investment if I get into the gourmet cultivation business.....a little reverse engeneering is always a good thing.....

Yes you can use a food dehydrator.

I use American Harvest Snackmaster food dehydrators.
The lowest setting is 95 degrees F.
There is no noticible loss of potency from using one.
And they dry the mushrooms a hell of alot faster than any other method!!

You can pick up a good food dehydrator at a second hand store.
I have found several of the American Havest models for $3.99 to $7.00 each.
These are usually in like new condition...people don't seem to use them.

The American Harvest sells for around $70.00 brand new.

Ebay might be another source if you don't have a good second hand store in your area.

good luck!

I think I remember reading before that using the dehydrators with temps up to 115F is ok and bio assay has showed no decrease in potentcy...I'm not sure though, search the forums.....thank God search is working again....thanks admin peps.

My alien friend disconnected the heating element. He likes it much better with just the food dehydrator's fan drying than with the heating element intact. Also, noticed that the shrooms seemed to turn more brown with the element on, but more bluing was present without it.
