I thought I had some for a minute but additional microscopic examination revealed forked cheilocystidia.

Maybe a new species, I gave it to Gaston Guzman so he can check it out.  Must not be common in this area as there are no collections of it in the Xalapa herbarium.

I found plenty of other papilate Psilocybes from section Cordisporae though.

Nice one Alan, did you check out Psilocybe subhoogshagenii, it often has irregularly branched cheilocystidia, the spores are similar in size but slightly different in shape, the macroscopic form is very similar to P. hoogshagenii var. hoogshagenii.

It is known only from the type locality in Colombia.

Supposedly Psilocybe subhoogshagenii can have a slightly longer papilla than P. hoogshagenii var. hoogshagenii.

I haven't been considering Colombian species much.

One of Gaston Guzman's assistants told me that the key in The Genus Psilocybe supplement is better so I will run it through that next time I look at the microscopy.

This is the one I was talking about:

The other pics and microscopy is not uploaded yet.  Its in the herbarium at Xalapa now and will hopefully be studied soon.

I don't think so.
The species you are referring to is P. hoogshagenii var. convexa. Aka P. semperviva.
There are a few of us here too who succesfully cultivated them.
OP however refers to P. hoogshagenii var hoogshagenii.
Good luck you guys, bring me back some prints!!!

Ah my apologies.  Very interesting, I had no idea there were so many minute differentiations between species.

No I don't, unfortunately, I was just comparing Dr Guzmán's descriptions and line drawings.

Psilocybe hoogshagenii var. hoogshagenii can have an acute papilla up to 4mm long while P. subhoogshagenii can have one up to 5mm long, I find Section Cordisporae and Sect. Zapotecorum to be the most interesting groups in the genus, especially the species that often have a long pseudorhiza, I am particularly drawn to P. papuana from the Eastern Highlands in Papua New Guinea.

Alan has an interesting new find from a charcoal pit in Cortadura, Mexico which I think looks macroscopically similar to P. hoogshagenii var. hoogshagenii.
I hope he doesn't mind me providing a link.

This morning, a mazatec shaman in the city of Huautla de Jiménez in Oaxaca has answered your prayers by providing us with 15 fresh specimens.  I am just finishing up the microscopy now.  Microscopically and macroscopically it is a good match for P. hoogshagenii var. hoogshagenii.

We searched all day but didn't find any in the places we checked.  We did accidentally find the entrance to the deepest cave in America.  We were hunting along a remote river in San Agustin and Cactu noticed that the river went into nowhere - The canyon was a dead end with cliffs where the river should exit.  We followed it to a place where the water fell hundreds of feet into the ground.  We sat on the edge and took some pictures.  Words can't express the feeling of standing near the edge of a massive cavern, deep in the subtropical vegetation with about a hundred gallons of water per second falling into it. When we got back to the car the locals said the cave was famous so we googled it and found lots of stuff.

Oh my God
Oh my God
Oh my God

why are u always so merciful to me???

i cant describe the feeling i have now
i am reading your text with tears in my eyes and shivering body.
i cant swallow my saliva rightfully - my heart fell into my stomach!

i am very speechless

Alan, some days ago i had the idea to write you a PM. i wanted to let you know to get some help from the natives if you´d have problems finding this holy sacrament. and i also got a vision where you and Cactu were looking for the fungus and found it on the ground. kneeing for it for picking it up...
...and now a Mazatec shaman who has the power from this mushroom and who worked all the years with this mushroom gave you it as a gift!

i dont know if you can imagine what i am feeling at the moment
it is a year-long dream that manifested now. and now the ultimate transformation process can begin!! :thirdeyeani:

i want to thank this mushroom spirit who found its way to us, thank you Alan and Cactu so much. Thank you Mazatec shaman. these thankful words are just words, but God knows what i feel about you and you´ll get a price not from this world!
you will be always in my prayers!

God bless you all my beloved ones!
