light white fuzz all over cakes
    #1522768 - 05/05/03 08:25 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Our shrooms have finally started fruiting and were doing well, but practically overnight there appeared this new fuzz. It's not mycelium - it's a very light white fuzz, looks like the fuzz on dandelions (the white stuff before the flowers) and it's all over the substrate. Looking closer, it almost looks like really fine, thin hairs. Is this a contaminent, or just too much humidity?

Is it greyish? May be cobweb.

How much does it stick out? More than an inch, less than an inch?

a PICTURE would be nice .

Good luck.

Ah, yes. Cobweb appears to be the culprit.

We're increasing the air circulation and carefully removed some of it. Can we continue trying to grow this batch, or is the cobweb toxic?

Not really toxic to humans but it inhibits mushrooms growth. Both compete for the same substrate.

Hey man, I woke up this morning and saw a bit of this stuff around the edges of my tray too! There was only a bit, but I don't want it to get worse. (a bit meaning like, half a cm long in a spot or two)...This happened the 2nd day after it was cased. What should i do? No one really said if it could be safely removed.

In the contam FAQ it says : " A small patch the size of a dime will spread to cover an entire jar/casing in just a day or two. "

I simply cannot let this happen. Can somebody please tell us what can be done about it? Can we simply take it off? Or will it just grow back?

Cut the infected area and about 1 inch of the surrounding area with a sterilized spoon, then spray the hole with an aseptic solution like water and h202 or bleach. Hippie salt tek is also good in this situation.
Finally you can fill the hole with some more sterilized vermiculite.
