Interesting Panaeolous species!! 10 ince tall one !!
    #15222364 - 10/13/11 09:40 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

well check out this monster!! i caught her peeking out of the tall grass so i snapped a quick shot. then i pulled her up and WOW  no thats a long friggin stipe!!

so my question is : are they a Panaeolous papilionaceus which i dont think they are, Panaelous subbalteatus, Panaeolous castaneifolius or Panaeolous olivaceus or something else!!?? the stipes were very long, fragile, and reddish with white fibrils.
there must have been dung in the grass because there was Stropharia semiglobattas everywhere

then there was these 2 . they were very beautiful and robust. the stipe was strong and almost white. they were hygraphanous , resembling a Pilocybe quite a bit.
Pan foe or something else ? i dont think they are foes tho. print is in progress.

then there were these. i thought they looked like a Panaeolopsis species maybe?? or just a Pan pap.

1. Please get a picture of the gills, Panaeolus looks promising, the stem length may be do to the grass length.
2. Maybe something like Panaeolus fimicola, Panaeolus sp. for sure.
3. Pan pap assuming they were growing with dung.

heres the gills for #1 you can see the black spores.

and P fimicola eh for #2 ? i was kinda thinking P fimicola as well. i took a quick peek, spores are BLACK !! so definetly not a foe.

ya i was thinking maybe P pap as well for #3 . there was lotsa dung present. but with those in turned cap margins, it always gets me excited.

1 might be Panaeolus acuminatus, I don't think 2 looks like P. cinctulus, more like the pictures of P. fimicola i have seen.  Though microscopy really is needed for 1 & 2.

i was looking at the Pan key at mushroom expert and i think with those long red stems 1 is probablty Panaeolous acuminatus! not active, but i like getting to know these "other" pans that dont get id'd all that often.

and i think your right about 2 aswell. stamets says they look like a Psilocybe, and these really resmeble one!!
thanks for taking a look, youve been really helpful lately.

The third one in the second pic set looks like P. acuminatus. The other two look more interesting. Looking at.the reddish umbo, I say they're more similar to olivaceus than fimicola.

EDIT: I just wanted to also clarify that P. olivaceus and P. castaneifolius are synonyms.

The morphology of Pans can vary, but the pileus looks wrong for fimicola to me. My gut keeps telling me olivaceus.

Anything  macroscopic referring to Pans is mainly conjecture, but fimicola/ater often have non-descript colors IME.

I know one way you can find out! Just be sure to save at least one cap for ID purposes.

EDIT: Here's the thread vjp's find was in
