I'm setting up my SGFC for my first grow - have a jar reaching 100% (then going through consolidation).
One thing confused me in this TEK regarding subsequent flushes after harvesting the first flush:
Quote:
"It is a good idea to allow your cakes to dry out after the first flush for a few days before dunking for the second flush
Wouldn't drying them out kill the mycelium? Or, is it only a partial drying ("airing out") that is intended?
Thanks for any clarification. Awesome information and pics, will be very helpful.

Hello,
I am in the stage of acquiring materials for my first grow. I have a question pertaining to inoculation; can I sterilize my tools with H202 instead of 70% ISO alcohol? I feel that this would be much safer.
Thanks!

No. H2O2 has no uses in this hobby. Also, iso is a sanitizer. We flame sterlize our tools. (scaples and needle tips)

hi, first of all, thank you for the tutorial and the ppl who answers the doubts. i have a question in this part:
Quote:
4. Remove your hands and the syringe from the box, flame sterilize your needle again and repeat as needed. You need to flame sterilize your needle between jars. One 12CC syringe should be able to make 12 1/2 pint BRF cakes. Do not place the foil back on your jars.
"Do not place the foil back on your jars."
if i leave the lid with the holes open in my room, will there be contamination?
why the cleanbox before then? coz later i will put the jars outside of it for a month, so it will contaminate i guess with my room.

neski,
The top of your cake is leveled off with dry vermiculite before you sterilize it. This layer acts as a barrier between falling contaminants and the nutritious BRF substrate below. After you inoculate, try not to move the jars much because you may knock down dirty verm into the substrate below.
By placing the foil back on, you restrict gas exchange (GE) and may choke out your mycelium.

If you're still worried about it,put a piece of micropore tape over the holes like my OCD ass still does.

Regarding Terrariums The shotgun terrarium used in this TEK is different from the one described by PF in the following ways:
1. The shotgun terrarium has holes, PF's is airtight 2. The shotgun terrarium uses perlite, PF's collects water on the bottom which must be siphoned out
Which terrarium works best? I am guessing that the shotgun terrarium is easier to maintain with less misting needed. Does one work better in an open room vs a closet or vice versa? Thanks.

A great tek man. I was able to start
birthing my cakes today after only 3 weeks or so. Also I used a 6quart shoebox as a modified shotgun fruiting chamber. I am using the bottoms of old agar petris as water trays.

Soooo I know the guide says to not really mess with the cakes after inoculation for about 10 days, but I couldn't help but check on them. The problem is that it has been about 5 days since I injected the spores and im not spotting any mycelium growth whatsoever. Shouldn't have begun growing by now??

Love your take on the Tek, specially the shotgun fruiting chamber. Question:
At the end of part 4, when taking about germination you show the jars with some kind of micro-porous tape on their lids. Is that to cover the holes while still allowing gas dissipation?
