Reishi Monotub With Pasteurized Sawdust (Harvest Nov. 27)

I'm getting this TEK together for a friend who has never grown mushrooms before but is very interested in Reishi. I will be supplying him with inoculated 3 kg rye spawn bags and he will be taking it from there.
Since he has no experience with mycology and no equipment I want to keep everything low tech. Pasteurizing with boiling water in a 5 gallon and fruiting in a monotub seems the simplest.
I'm giving this a test run before I pass it off.
Recipe
1L fuel pellets 1.5 l boiling water 25 ml gypsum
I found some bucket lids at Home Depot that have a screw on cap, It just happens to be 70mm just like jar lids...

For whatever reason the lids don't fit on my other 5 gallon buckets, they're a bit too small. I found some buckets from drywall mud in my basement, the lids fit, go figure. Anyways, I'm stuck with only one 5 gallon and one 4 gallon bucket for now. I cut out the caps and inserted synthetic filter disks, now the buckets can suck in clean air as they cool.
I put 4 L of pellets in each bucket. I added 1/2 cup of gypsum to one bucket, for the other bucket I dissolved 1/2 cup of gypsum in the water before I dumped it in. Dissolving works better, I found some clumps in the bucket I mixed dry.
I poured 6 L of boiling water into each bucket then put on the lid.
After the buckets had cooled the sawdust from each bucket mixed with a 4L Reishi spawn bag.
Once thoroughly mixed the sawdust was dumped into a container lined with a black garbage bag. I evened out the sawdust and cut the garbage bag a few inches above the substrate.
The containers were taped up and the holes under the handles were stuffed with polyfill.

I don't have any idea what the ideal size or substrate depth would be. It worked out to 5-6" deep and 12"x16". I think the containers are 50L.
Hope it works. If you see any room for improvement or have any Ideas feel free to post.

I am not sure with reishi, but above 10'' the bottom of the substrate might get anaerobic. Have you seen this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9958849/page/1/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/4

Yes I've seen that thread, it was the inspiration for me to try this out. Good to know about not going over 10", I was thinking 6" might be a bit deep.

Made another couple tubs. These things are so easy to put together I don't think my fiend will have any trouble.
The trash bags work a lot better if you cut them open then lay them flat over the container. When you dump the sub in it conforms perfectly to the container.
Took a better picture of the finished tub.

Does anyone have any tricks to manage Reishi spawn? It grows so thick I can barely tear it apart. It also turns the rye to mush.

The electrical tape I used to seal the first two tubs wasn't sticking too good so I repalaced it with masking tape.
Since I had the tape off I took a peek. Not bad for 5 days growth.

How long should I wait after full colonization before I fruit?

I've got one of these babies upstairs right now too. I also have a couple bags. The bags are starting to turn yellow on top which I'm taking as a sign that they are ready to fruit. I think I'm going to wait for my monotub to start showing this change in color before I take the sleeping bag off the top.
Exactly what changes do you plan on making to start fruiting your monotub?

When you do your G1s do not allow FAE. I use a regular canning lid flipped upside down so fae is minimal, in-oxic conditions causes Reishi to run, yet not form the dense rubber growth that makes knocking the grain apart impossible before transfer. Reishi done in this manner is easy to shake apart and the colonization will be fast and thorough yet not thick. Using this technique my G1 colonize in 4 days, and can sit on the shelf for weeks in this condition. If you open the jar and then put the lid back on, then watch out, cause you will cause enough FAE for the condition that you despise to occur.

That is good to know Mycoelf. Thanks for sharing.
I had to refer to my "L2G" transfers when I tried Reishi.
("Leather to Grain")
Amazing stuff. I had a hard time just cutting it into pieces that would come out of the mason jar.
Take care,

Shpongle1, I'm going to be putting the tubs in my Oyster room so temps of 16°C max and 80%+ humidity. On my last blocks I waited way too long. They were over 1 month before I got around to fruiting them. They had lots of browning and were very leathery. They're still sitting in the fruiting room and haven't done much.
Good to know mycoelf, the leathery blocks were a real turn off. I've got a bunch of projects on the go and can't always get to them in time. I like my spawn to have at least a 3 week window of use.
I was thinking too much air might be the problem. I'm using the 0.5 micron filter bags. I was going to try the 0.2 but now I'll probably just tape over a filter and see how it does.

Awe man, my bags have a lot of yellow/turning to brown. Mostly a yellowish orange. I just fruited them today and I hope I didn't wait too long.
Good to know though, I don't know that much about monotubs but from what I remember reading somewhere, one guy just basically just left it alone and it seemed to do pretty well. If only it were that easy...

Sorry this is wrong, Reishi like it warm. Mine are now sitting at room temp. Maybe that's why my other blocks never fruited

Do you find yourself needing to get in there and dab up moisture off of the surface? I've got moisture on my reishi monotub but I don't want to keep opening it up so I've been trying to ride it out as much as possible.
Has this been an issue for you at all? And do you know if it will cause any harm? It's not soaked or anthing but the lid is occasionally dripping down onto the colonized material. I'm trying to keep the CO2 build up for now if possible to go after the antlers, that's why I'm opposed to opening often.
Edit: I realize standing water on the surface is a bad thing, basic knowledge. I'm just not sure how drop of moisture compare in their negative effects. And I've heard before to not open the monotub if at all possible, so it's tricky to know how to balance that information as a first timer I guess.

How much water are we talking about? I did have a fare amount of water pooling between the bag and container after colonization but i just poured it off before fruiting. Now the moisture on the surface is mostly metabolites. I'm not worried about it.

OK, just wondering. I think a lot of mine may be metabolites as well because it's a slightly yellowish type of color. I've already soaked some up once so I'm just going to leave it now. I just checked and I think I might be starting to see some coming in!
Good luck man. Keep us posted.

I'm using fuel pellets because they're available and convenient for me. If you have a bunch of sawdust at your disposal use that instead.
With the plain sawdust you may not be able to get away with just the boiling water 'pasteurization', the pellets are exposed to high heat and pressure when they go through the forming machine.
You will have to check the consistency of the sawdust, you want something coarse not fine like flour.

I dont have any hands on experience but I believe they will keep on growing and growing. In nature when they form conks on trees they will grow for years. I think it very much depends on when you feel like you have a big enough haul/harvest to satisfy yourself.
you might find they slow down in growth at some point? then it might be wise to harvest and repeat process again.
I've really enjoyed watching this thread Grobo, you've inspired me to attempt a reishi monotub myself. I am currently expanding some jars of reishi mycelium whilst practising my g2g transfers so hopefully if all goes well i might be able to make 1 up in a week or so. I have some of what i believe to be hardwood shavings and some oat bran and gypsum to supplement it with... Just haven't figured out how to pasteurise it yet.
regarding youre tubs, they seem to have really come on alot in the past 10 days, so might be worth leaving them another 10 days? loving those fruits! Great job.

The Reishi was nice and cracker dry by the time I got up. My dehydrator was on the lowest setting possible, under 35°C.
Ended up with just over 3 Oz.

I'm going to start by making some tea, but I'm looking for a good tincture/infusion recipe. I've got all the equipment I need: separatory funnel, centrifuge, vacuum pump, etc.

What reason can you think of that would cause my monotub to not fruit? I was informed it was a fairly "set it and forget it" technique for growing reishi...
I'm not entirely convinced that they wouldn't have grown eventually but it sure seemed to take a while and now it's got a little green mold on it so that baby is presumably a goner.

I have FINALLY written up a couple teks as to how SHP has done things in the past. DISCLAIMER: This is not for the newbie to mycology, and not going to work for everyone! This is simply what works for one person when other teks and methods have failed miserably! ~~~~~How SHP does their unconventional WBS Prep!! (NO DRY METHOD)~~~~ ~~~~~SHP's highly disputed method of doing ALL their work outside of a flow hood or a Still air box!~~~~~ ~~~~~Troubles harvesting the side and bottom pins in your mono?
