Drying of substrate
    #1522182 - 05/05/03 05:02 PM (15 years, 26 days ago)

I have BRF/Verm 1/2 pint cakes colonizing in a decent steady fashion.  It's been 10 days and they have slowed a little bit.  I thought this might be because I am heating the incubator with a space heater and a couple of times it got to about 90 degrees Farenheit.  I'm a little concerned about the substrate drying and was wondering if there was anything I could do to add moisture to the substrate?  Would putting a container with perlite and water to add humidity help at all?  Thanks

you seem to be sniffing out your own problems. ditch the space heater. don't try to maintain humidity in your incubator. somebody'll come along and post a link to the rubbermaid/aquarium heater incubator. These are practically failsafe. Other options include reptile heating pads and oil-filled radiator heaters (my preference). You DO NOT want ambient temps to get over 84-86 degrees as colonization time will slow drastically and the mycelium becomes very susceptible to contamination as well as permanent "injury".
