I've found several species of gymnopilus in Illinois. They've all been of questionable edibility, unfortunately. Gymnopilus can be difficult to identify past genus without a microscope. Though, The psychoactive species tend to have very unique macroscopic features. I am confident that G. Luteus and G. Luteofolis can be found across the state, as wiscokid finds them with gusto just a short distance over the border. As to when they flush here... There is no data available. So if you do find them, you will be a pioneer of sorts!

I doubt you will find gymnopilus junonius (spectabilis) in Illinois.
